Council alliance with Petrosino against $1M grant to the Hoboken Public Education Fund

The Texas Truth-Twister Anthony Petrosino, has never met a war against the Hoboken School District he didn't like (or start). What's different this time?  This time--incredibly-- Petrosino has allies on Hoboken's City Council. In fact, it appears that the Texas Twit's latest headline is part of an anti-administration campaign coordinated by Council members Fisher, Giattino and DeFusco against the Hoboken  School District.

What's it all about?

KMS, the developer for the proposed hotel at the Post Office, has promised to gift $1M to the Hoboken Public Education Foundation (HPEF).  The $1M gift is one of several developer give-backs which will be announced tomorrow morning.

Unbeknownst to the general public, KMS partner Dennis Martin is a fierce advocate of public education; his wife is a retired Public School teacher, and she currently serves on the Board of Education in their South Jersey community.  The Martins have been vehement supporters of Hoboken District Schools for some time, and supporters of the HPEF. They understand how their gift will fund current and future HPEF initiatives.

What can be wrong with that?

Ask the Council of Spite. Their take-no-prisoners, scorched-earth war against Mayor Bhalla (like Beth Mason's scorched earth war against Dawn Zimmer) has provoked a counter-offensive to stop the $1M gift from happening; a counter-offensive which promises to divide District and Charter school communities.  This is not conjecture nor hyperbole.  Sources report:

(1) Jen Giattino, Tiffanie Fisher and Mike DeFusco have told parties involved in the hotel project that they will "mobilize charter school parents" against the $1M HPEF gift-- and they have done it  as follows:
  • VBM-harvest recipient Eduardo Gonzalez was mobilized to write "protest" letter telling charter parents to rally tomorrow at the mayor's press conference
  • Hoboken District Hater Anthony Petrosino was mobilized to foment opposition against the $1M gift on his "education" blog
(2)  Jen Giattino, Tiffanie Fisher and Mike DeFusco have told parties involved in the hotel project that they will vote down or amend the resolution to block a $1M gift to the Hoboken Public Education Fund (HPEF), from KMS, the developer of the proposed waterfront hotel.

(3) Tiffanie Fisher called the HPEF "the mayor's pet political project."

Peter Cunningham has been quiet- 'like a ground hog" one source put it. Where does he stand?

It is clear where Jen Giattino, Tiffanie Fisher and Mike DeFusco stand.  With Anthony Petrosino.  They are fighting in the trenches with the double-dipping  Crapademic.

I don't think Council members truly understand the burdens on the Hoboken District.  Fisher, who did not know that libraries are publicly funded, may not know that public schools are also funded from the state and federal government, and that both revenue sources have sharply decreased.  Here's a look at how hard Hoboken's District School funding has been hit by cuts in state and federal aid from the BoE's 2018-2019 proposed budget.

And, as state and federal revenue for the Hoboken School District shrink, the state is increasing Hoboken's Charter School Transfer projected budget in unsustainable amounts. As noted in the 2018-2019 propsed District Budget:
"Hoboken Public Schools (HPS) received a State Aid Notice, dated 03/14/18, indicating a projected budgeted amount of $10,249,025 for the 2018-2019 Charter School Transfer. When compared to the State Notice dated 12/18/17, the increase would calculate to $1,070,344. The subject increase is determined to be unreasonable and unnecessarily encumbers funds that could be better used for district programs and initiatives. The unreasonable determination of the subject Charter School Transfer amount is based on a comparison to what transpired in 2017-2018 budget year."
Council members Giattino, Fisher and DeFusco who want to deprive Hoboken Public Schools of this much needed gift, need to think about why a non-profit like the HPEF exists in the first place.

If vindictive Council persons succeed to kill the gift to the HPEF, it'll be a Pyrrhic victory. All will be long-remembered for hurting a non-profit that serves the most socioeconomically diverse student population in Hoboken. Read between the lines.

And for those who'd like a trip down memory lane...

  2. Voters should be reminded how this gang is anti-public school and anti-library next election cycle. Let's see how many votes they lose for these foolish positions.

  3. the council of butthurts has become particularly nasty and mean-spirited lately, basically trying to screw local kids out of better educational conditions in school and library. they should be ashamed of themselves.

  4. I'm so angry to hear this. My son goes to Calabro. I support the HPEF. They're a great non profit that helps public schools offer what charters already seem to have-like class trips. We live in the sixth ward and Ms. Giatino lost my vote.
