COUNCIL DEFUNDS BHALLA DEFENSE, ASSISTS BELFIORE HIT
In their most vomitous act of moral debasement to-date, former allies of Ravi Bhalla have entered a long-running smear campaign Jen Giattino once called "baseless" and "nasty" (see above letter).
In Giattino's own words, she called the unrelenting attacks on Bhalla "mud."
Well, on August 1, 2018-- 5 years and one election loss later-- Giattino has flipped like a switch. She, Tiffanie Fisher and Peter Cunningham voted "yes" to defund Ravi Bhalla's defense against an 8 year-old complaint filed by Bhalla's nemesis, political operative Perry Belfiore.
Before addressing the merits of the Belfiore complaint (or lack thereof), GA wants you to think about what pulling indemnification for any City official-- including unpaid volunteers on Hoboken's municipal boards-- really means. Because when complaints of any kind are filed against elected officials or board members, their defense costs are borne by the City of Hoboken.
Accordingly, people who enter public service trust that the City will defend them. (Should Jen Giattino face an ethics complaint in her capacity as an elected official, she should expect the City of Hoboken to defend her.)
But now, because our Council voted 7-2 to defund Bhalla's defense, every Hoboken resident considering volunteering on a board should think long and hard first. Ask if you can you afford legal costs when Council members Giattino, Fisher, Cunningham, Ramos and DeFusco pull your defense funding because you're not 'with' them.
Further, complaints filed against elected officials are often frivolous, politically-charged, and/or filed in bad faith to embarrass and/or weaken a political adversary or side.
Perry Belfiore's complaint is just that. In 2014, the Judge who threw out the complaint called the charges "frivolous and unwarrented" and called Belfiore "a relentless political antagonist" who "has launched malicious, bigoted personal attacks against Bhalla at Hoboken Council meetings."
The 2014 decision was overturned, now Bhalla is entitled to due process to clear his name.
And so, the Council's 7-2 vote to defund Bhalla's defense is a petty cheap shot, an act of political retribution; it is identical to former BoE Trustee Peter Biancamano's vote to pull indemnification for School Board Trustees in a frivolous ethics complaint filed by an HoLa parent.
Yes, the Ramos majority's shitty attempt to deprive Bhalla the right to due process was tried by Biancamano at the school board against Reform board members. Inflicting economic damage on political opponents this way is positively Trumpian.
It gets worse... because Belfiore's ethics complaint against Bhalla evolved from ethics claims against Peter Cunningham that were publicized on smear tabloid Hoboken411.
