Like Peter Cammarano, Christopher Campos, Frank Raia and so many more Hoboken officials we must assume Carmelo Garcia is not guilty until he is proven guilty.
Weren't Chris Campos, Carmelo Garcia and Reuben Ramos the "Three Amigos" of Hoboken? When is Reuben going to get arrested by the Feds? He's the last one!
Nancy glad your back, but to correct the previous post, the original three amigos were Maurice Fitzgibbons, Bernie Kenny and Dave Roberts. Chris. Carmelo and Ruben became know as the 3 amigos because of Spanish ancestry. Today a woke society would consider this an example of racial profiling
How are you dear Perry? According to Al Sullivan, he wrote that Hoboken's "Three Amigos" were Campos, Garcia and Ramos - and it wasn't a pejorative but rather a reference to "Latino rising stars". If they were Jewish, they could have been called "Three Mensches." Same idea. Glad to see you, and stay well!
Although Al was good he wasn't the first political journalist. Peter Weiss anointed Maurice, Bernie and David the Three Amigos due to longstanding friendships when they emerged as a viable anti Russo Block. Chris, Carmelo and Ruben where dubbed the Three Amigos due to Ethnicity. While Chris, Carmelo and Ruben are all first generation Spanish and rose in government under an inclusive Robert's Administration they where at best acquaintance, in fact I was present when Ruben first met Chris. Again perceptions and comments pre-covid are viewed differently today. I would not like people to say this site is not Woke or worse racist.
Perry - labels aside are you actually trying to say Campos, Garcia and Ramos were just acquaintances - not close friends politically joined at the hip? Seriously?
You are all remembering the history imprecisely, Perry is correct that it was Bernie, Dave and Maurice who were the Three Amigos. What Perry has neglected is to correct Nancy that Chris, Ruben and Memo were known as the Latin Kings, a gangland association that, while offensive, is something they actively encouraged and may have even dubbed themselves as a show of force.
Some might call Perry’s omission of this important detail a form of intellectual dishonesty. But on this point in particular, he is like Carmelo in that he has the right to remain silent.
Carmelo's interest in bling is too comical. They are caricatures. I never heard the term "The Three Amigos" except in reference to Rueben, Chris and Carmelo.
But arrests, indictments, conspiring to accept bribes - none of that has proven to matter in the long run in the cesspool of Hoboken, Hudson County and New Jersey politics. That's why nothing changes, and city council is the way it is.
Something like 1/3 of every tax dollar in New Jersey goes to some corruption scheme or another.
I don't recall either Ruben, Chris or Carmelo being called the Latin Kings which would have been objectionable on its face. I can only tell history as I witnessed it. I know this site excells in guilt by association so again Ruben, Carmelo and Chris share a common ethnicity, were once in Roberts government but to my knowledge out side of politics did not socialize.
Now Perry, if I didn't know you better, I'd say you were pre-emptively warning me not to write about the three childhood pals, lest "someone" (you) call this blog "racist." I know you would never do such a thing! Well you know, others are free to make such judgments, I would simply say they are wrong. But you got me looking in the Hudson Reporter archives... have you ever read this one? https://archive.hudsonreporter.com/2000/05/20/messy-situation-former-campaign-managers-file-charges-against-each-other/
We'll have to agree to disagree on Chris, Ruben and Memo being thick as thieves and embracing the moniker.
Where we agree, however, is on Peter Weiss being the GOAT of Hudson County political columnists. Thank you for bringing up his venerable name. Al, while not without his moments, is the Kmart to Peter's Saks Fifth Avenue.
Nancy, self medicating so last post tonight. You can post about three childhood friends, but I post my attendance at Ruben and Chris's first meeting which occurred in Ruben's hospital room in St Mary's Hospital. Chris was being considered as a replacement for the 4th ward council seat. Chris and I spent the next two day together, and when asked my opinion by Ruben I gave Chris a resounding recommendation. What was not to like, a law school grad who grew up in the HHA and returned after graduation to help the community. I came to know Carmelo when the Ortiz/Garcia fight hit the fan. That Chris, Carmelo and indeed Peter gave in to human frailties pains me but as I tell my children I will always love you but now I do not like you. Ruben has always been the steadier, mature individual. Hard to anger easy to befriend and would think that trying to besmirsh an individual because of behaviors of others beneath contempt. Married couples in many circumstances are ignorant of spousal behavior. Guilt by association is the cheapest form of aspersion
Perry, local politics are a low priority now, with covid spreading through Hoboken like a brushfire. I believe *most* residents are looking for leadership and responsible behavior from elected officials. Throwing in-person super-spreader fundraisers is not responsible behavior. Nor is delaying a vote after Halloween for the HPD to issue fines for house parties. Some on this council (a faction that Ruben is a member of) have not been putting the health and well-being of the community first. If you want to help Ruben, then that's the advice I'd give. That's my own personal interest right now- not the lifelong friendship of Ruben and Carmelo. Take care of yourself, Perry! No joke. At least six Hoboken residents are hospitalized with covid. It's poised to get worse before it gets better.

ReplyDeleteProbably so on that last point, Perry. I think I first read that (3 amigos = CC, RR, CG) in Al Sullivan's column.
