Read the above Fisher quote from the last Hoboken City Council meeting. At that meeting, the 6-member Diaper Squad voted on a resolution recommending that Hoboken's (excellent) public servant, Hoboken Police Chief Ken Ferrante, have his contract trimmed from 2 years to 1. Thanks to Fisher's slip-of-the-tongue, we know that the "some other people" wish to time the expiration of Ferrante's contract with the mayoral election.
What does this mean?
The City Council lineup of wannabe- mayors aim to cut Ferrante's contact to terminate with Ravi Bhalla's first term in office. That leaves a juicy job to deal to a political crony, in exchange for...?
Unlike Mayor Bhalla who understands the maxim: if it ain't broke, don't fix it, who would never jeopardize the protection of Hoboken residents, the current hacks on the council don't care. They are playing politics with the safety of Hoboken residents. Take that literally. Under HPD Chief Ferrante, the Hoboken crime rate has fallen from 42 crimes per 1,000 residents (2001) to 8.6 crimes per 1,000 residents (2019). Just look at the drop in crime from 2018 to 2019:

- Jealous political hacks plan to oust the most competent Police Chief Hoboken has had in decades to make room for a political crony.
Yes, Ferrante is Hoboken's Fauci; the Trumpian council has surrogates attacking the Chief on social media.
Isn't it obvious? A public health crisis should not be politicized nor should public safety.
Nevertheless, the anti-administration council members are attacking the Chief's contract, destabilizing his job security, and threatening him with termination at the expiration of this mayor's term. Well, I believe that the council's threat to HPD Chief Ferrante's job security plus Mayor Bhalla's commitment to the continued leadership of our police force under HPD Chief Ferrante will be a prominent 2021 election issue.
Good luck convincing the people of Hoboken to dump our respected Police Chief.

DeleteIt sounds like like Fisher is under the incorrect impression that a new mayor can fire Ferrante and choose a new police Chief after
ReplyDeletehis contract expires. However, unless the law was very recently changed, a new Mayor will not be able to replace Chief Ferrante no matter what the term of his contract is. In New Jersey Cities like Hoboken with fewer than 150,000 people - called Class II cities in the NJ code - in practice meaning everywhere except Jersey City and Newark - Police chiefs aredare appointed by thetthe Mayor but do not serve at the pleasure of the Mayor. They can be removed only for cause which in practice means they pretty much can't be removed unless they are convicted of a crime.
Ferrante, like Falco before him, will be Chief as long as he wants to be, until mandatory retirement at age 65 no matter who is elected Mayor in 2021 and beyond. Ferrante has virtually complete job security granted by NJ law, no contract needed.
Councilman Russo for one, certainly knows this so he should have explained how it works to Fisher rather than let her make a fool of herself.
