DeFusco, Ramos open 2023 council campaigns

While COVID-19 has been rocking our world, some Hoboken politicos are quietly preparing for their next election.  Two of them who won re-election to Hoboken City Council only 7 months ago, already have opened their 2023 council campaigns: 4th Ward Councilman Ruben Ramos and First Ward Councilman Mike DeFusco.

RAMOS FOR COUNCIL 2023
Ramos opened Ramos for Council 2023 on January 23, 2020- 23 days after being sworn in to his 4-year council term.

On the same day, Ramos filed his final campaign finance report for 2019's Ramos for Council. Ramos transferred $923.07 and all of his debt, $22.094.50, to his newly-opened 2023 campaign, thereby closing out his 2019 campaign account with a balance of $0.

Yet, in spite of these significant financial transfers, Ramos for Council 2023 has not filed an April 2020 quarterly campaign ELEC report.

DEFUSCO FOR HOBOKEN CITY COUNCIL 2023
Councilman DeFusco opened his 2023 council campaign account on April 16, 2020- exactly one month ago.

Unlike Ramos, DeFusco has not reported transfers of funds nor debt from his 2019 campaign to his newly-opened one. So far, he has kept his 2019 campaign account open, last reporting a balance of $8,050.78 on January 6, 2020.  What's missing?

DeFusco has not filed his quarterly April ELEC report for either his old or new campaigns, 2019 and 2023 respectively.

Curiously, DeFusco reports himself as Treasurer on his new D-1, for 2023. However, his new D-1 appears to be filled out by old (2019) Treasurer, Pedro Gonzalez.  Mr. Gonzalez is the father of 2015 5th ward council candidate, Eduardo Gonzalez.   Same handwriting- see what I mean?

GONZALEZ, Treasurer

DEFUSCO, Treasurer

I've heard of ghostwriters, but not ghost-Treasurers.

Because DeFusco has not filed a current ELEC, he has not yet reported receipts from his pandemic-eve fundraiser, held on March 10.  Understandably, few wanted to attend.  Still, some did.  So, how come the councilman has declined to report thoses receipts?

All in all, this pandemic- time planning on political futures is a window into recent petty council  behavior.  By that I mean, the bizarre focus on who-gets-credit-for-what while Hoboken residents are depending on local government to work effectively together, not fight like toddlers in a sandbox.

  1. How will the other City Council members fall into line when the time comes to commit to a mayoral candidate Ramos or DeFusco ? Obviously long time Mayor Bhala Council supporters Cohen, Doyle and will continue their support. If Councilmen Ramos and DeFusco both will continue as candidates, the real question is then who will Council members Falco, Fisher, Giattino and Russo support Ruben or Michael ? Or will one or more run spoiler campaign ? If I had to take a guess there has been a visible shift distancing themselves away from DeFusco and towards Ramos.

    1. My guess is that most- if not all, of those you named will back Ruben. If Ruben decides to run, he'll be a formidable opponent against DeFusco. IMO he wants to run, and all of that noise Tiffanie Fisher is making now is on Ruben's behalf. My next guess is that in return for her relentless Bhalla-bashing, she wants an appointment in Ruben's administration, or perhaps a County post which Sacco could make happen. All in all, what's happened to 'old' reform since 2017 is sad. So many folks have shown their true colors.
