2010 CENSUS DATA- CITY OF HOBOKEN

Per available decade-old census data, 18% of Hoboken's population (50-80+ years) falls in the highest mortality range for COVID-19.  That number is obviously inaccurate.  What is our current population and how many fall in the highest risk age groups?  That information is pending collection of 2020 Census data from Hoboken residents.

It can be assumed that many currently non-symptomatic Hoboken residents have had exposure. But the lack of available testing means the COVID-19 infection rate in our city is unknown. Accordingly, Hoboken's Draconian measures are designed to mitigate new infection, including the new 10PM curfew, closure of eating-in service at restaurants , complete closure of bars, closure of schools, day care facilities, gyms, and so on.

Kudos to the Mayor and OEM for doing all the right things to protect our residents and our healthcare workers, our hospital.  We are operating in the dark, trying to mitigate outcomes that befell Wuhan, China and Milan, Italy, that are unfolding in Europe.

Moreover, the after-effects of infection with COVID-19 are unknown: how long an infected person sheds the virus. Our long-term future is in the hands of global biomedical research scientists. Our current future is in local health care workers, government agencies and our federal, state and local government. One thing that you can do while you're home, is to fill out your 2020 census form.

The data collected in the Decennial Census determines the distribution of over $675 billion in federal funding for communities, and re-draws the boundaries of Congressional and state legislative districts. Now that our community is fighting a pandemic, the data on our population may help the government to assess risk in Hoboken for dedicated COVID-19 associated federal aid,  and  help the scientific community in research studies which will continue long after life returns to normal.

So please, people. Take advantage of the time and complete your 2020 Census form!
