PHIL rockin' them Fox Hill seniors!

Big difference

Newly-minted Councilman Phil Cohen has hit the ground running, winning the hearts and minds of constituents through the magic of keeping campaign promises.

You know, I've never seen someone this thankful to be elected, and it shows.

Since his election, Phil's he's hosted three "Coffee with Cohen" constituent meetings, each  in a different part of the 5th Ward at a different venue. The "Coffee with Cohen" venues so far: Anthony David's, Dolce and Salato, and Bwè Kafe. Phil also issues bimonthly newsletters with community updates, posts daily PSAs on Facebook and on Twitter, and on top of all of that,  he's sponsored two events at Fox Hills for seniors.

Phil's first Fox Hills event was in December, a "Thank You" luncheon, where he read the eulogy for his father and introduced his mom. Later, he told the seniors he'd be getting them a karaoke machine, something he'd heard they'd been asking for.

Yesterday, Councilman Cohen kept that promise. Phil brought the Fox Hill seniors a totally tricked-out new karaoke machine.

Not your Grandma's karaoke machine, this one can stream Bluetooth devices, has connectors for a/v monitors or computers and a built in monitor. The seniors were thrilled. They plan to use the machine's amp for Bingo games, and community karaoke nights.   In May, they are having a Mother's day fashion show, and plan to stream audio for that.  Phil also left them CDs with karaoke graphics that display on the amp monitor, that play hundreds of songs.

Why am I telling you this story?

Because Cohen didn't have to do all this, his next campaign is 4 years away.  That is the good that a person in a position of power can do when he/she cares  A few on the Hoboken City Council are sorely lacking in the Caring Department.  Sure, they'll woo their constituents at election time with 50 bucks and a bunch of promises, and you won't see them again until the next election.

So thanks Phil, for doing a mitzvah for the seniors. I won't make jokes about your singing, but don't ever quit your day job!  Everybody, sing along with Phil!

Well, it's nice to see Phil building a good relationship with his constituents. Not that his predecessor, Peter Cunningham, wasn't well-liked; he was. Look, his pals gave him a key. That's much better than a combination lock!

(True story: I just made Phil promise me he'd never accept a key. Okay, maybe if he becomes the first Jew on the Moon... )
