Caught in the act? (a Hoboken crime story)

Rage

A prominent local event coordinator for non-profits and Hudson County candidates can now add "crime victim" to her lengthy resume.

Last Thursday night, she parked her black Ford Explorer SUV in front of Jerry and Louise, the bar owned by Anthony 'Stick' Romano.  While she was in the bar, this happened to her car (see photo).  This was no ordinary keying where the vandal drags the key along the length of the car or window, this was rage; the car was literally beaten with a key.

So the question is, who did this?  Once that's answered, it seems likely we'll know why. Because this act looks like retribution.  Of course, anything is possible.  Does it look random to you?

So far, video footage from two cameras on Washington Street have been located, covering the time during which the crime is believed to have occurred: 11:20 pm and 12:15 am.

GA hears that the victim may also be offering a reward to anyone with information about this crime; information that leads to the arrest of the person or persons allegedly responsible. In the meantime, the HPD is investigating.

Hoboken's Finest are the finest. If anyone can nail this thug, they can.

ADVICE TO LOCAL BUSINESSES:
A security camera (Nest, Ring) costs about $200 and is easy to install. (If I could do it, trust me- anyone can.)  If you don't already have one watching the street-you should. Because if any suspicious activity occurs outside of your business--if anyone tries to break in and enter-- you can see it happening in real time on your phone or computer.  Some devices even have an intercom feature; you can speak to whomever is on the other side of the camera.

Just do it, business owners!

That's it, people.

  1. I bet they thought it was Romano's County SUV , which might be why they targeted her car mistakenly. STILL very bad. WHERE's the FOOT PATROLs in the City? Doubt they'll get caught...

    1. I thought the same. Hoboken, the "most walkable city in America" doesn't have foot patrols.

  2. Our car had been keyed in the past and my spouse waived it off. I was always suspicious and I am more than willing to bet that some political thug did it intentionally.

    2. The only city employees walking are the ones giving visitors $54 parking tickets and towing while people dine and shop... Politicians get $60,000 with guards and drivers for free as Cars of residents and guests get Keyed, ticketed, towed and pissed on - Let's hope Chief Twitter is on it!

    3. Lotta policing experts on this thread! All I can say is that Hoboken crime has dropped precipitously since "Chief Twitter" took control of the HPD- stats here:

It is fair to ask why more cops aren't on foot patrol, but my guess is they are deployed strategically in parts of Hoboken that experience more street crime. As for eyes and ears on the street, perhaps Hoboken would consider an all-volunteer Auxiliary Police force. My Dad was a volunteer auxiliary policeman when I was a kid in Jackson Heights, Queens. He wore a uniform and a badge- I think he had a walkie-talkie, baton but no gun. I was/am proud of his volunteer service and still have his badge. Maybe this would work here in Hoboken, a city with a pending budget crisis and desire for street presence.

  3. They used to have foot patrols, I remember them. I thought they were increasing them again 5-6 years ago.

    1. I think they still have them... I'll find out. I'd assume they are strategically placed. Hoboken has the occasional drug bust, and I've heard anecdotally about gang activity, and people coming in from out-of-town for nefarious purposes. Hoboken's main street is generally safe, except when the 'Cons' come to town, and then the place is crawling with cops.
