The above ACLU-NJ press release was issued in support of Wednesday's Resolution-- the one calling for New Jersey elected officials and the U.S. Congress to reunify migrant families presently separated in detention centers, end migrant detention as a practice, and afford these families meaningful due process in immigration proceedings.
At the meeting, there were so many speakers on this resolution that Council President Giattino moved it up the agenda to be heard first. The public spoke for about one hour; impassioned voices included two members of the ACLU-NJ Board of Trustees, Amardeep Singh and the founder of this statewide initiative and co-author of the resolution, Afsheen Shamsi. Supporters had to be heartened by the unanimous passage of the resolution.
That includes yours truly. When this Dark Era passes (now, please!), Hoboken will have been on the right side of history.
Big props to the Councilpersons who worked with the ACLU-NJ to make this happen: Phil Cohen and Emily Jabbour.
If anyone cuts video, send it over.
