This should be a no-brainer... but then again, we live in Crazytown, where City Council members award each other keys to the City.
On deck tonight: a resolution co-written by the NJ-ACLU, as part of their state-wide campaign calling for New Jersey elected officials and the U.S. Congress to (1) reunify migrant families presently separated in detention centers, (2) to end migrant detention as a practice, and (3)to afford these families meaningful due process in immigration proceedings.
There are currently about 2,000 immigrants detained in New Jersey, many of whom cannot afford a lawyer; possibly hundreds are locked up in Hudson County Corrections and Rehabilitation Center in Kearny. Because in 2018, Hoboken Freeholder, Anthony Romano, voted with the majority to renew Hudson County's $30M contract with ICE to continue holding immigration detainees at our county jail.
Tonight's resolution (posted below), sponsored by 5th Ward Councilman Phil Cohen and At-Large Councilwoman Emily Jabbour, was co-written with NJ-ACLU Board Trustee Afsheen Shamsi. Shamsi is spearheading this human rights campaign, and has succeeded in passing similar resolutions in Montgomery, Bound Brook and Princeton, New Jersey. Is Hoboken next?
You know, this resolution is driving local Trump-humpers crazy. Why? Since when does human decency have a political affiliation?
Unless of course, you are a cold-blooded, sorry sack of shit who can pay $200,000 for a Mar-a-lago membership but can't cough up $2,000 to clothe and feed your own kid....

ACLU- COHEN-JABBOUR RESOLUTION
Whereas criminals of all types pose a threat to both Americans and illegal immigrants they should be housed in a proper facility where they can be removed from America and no longer threaten to steal, rape, murder, etc anyone else here.
