UPDATE: VOTE TOTALS 2015 v 2019 (with VBMS)

Here we go, people- "Vote Totals" comparative chart updated for all-inclusive (machines, VBMs, provisionals)  2019 vote totals.

Please note, the previous fourth ward machine vote total has been updated; apparently only 86% of votes had been reported due to technical problems at one polling station.

GA will post ward/district breakdowns- stay tuned.

Most of you folks know that I like to autopsy elections.  This one is very interesting: the first post-Reform split ward election, with two candidates, Jen Giattino and Tiffanie Fisher, radically re-branded in a coalition with pay-to-players and VBM harvesters.

Did it matter?  Not to their base of supporters. To the rest of us, yeah.  But, still... the entire subset of politically tuned-in folks on both sides is teeny-tiny relative to the wider Hoboken electorate.  This election was not decided by junkies.

And so, yesterday many folks observed that turn-out was way down-- including the verbose Peter Cunningham, who sent out a panicked email about low turn-out in the Fifth Ward.   Was  that true, or perception?

GA compared turnout in 2019 with 2015's ward election.

See above bar chart: a comparative of total machine vote counts: in 2015 ward election and 2019 ward election.  The white numbers reflect the total machine votes. I have shown the 2015 VBMs/provisionals graphically- that data is unavailable for 2019, I will plug in when it comes online.

Of course all sorts of variables are ignored, but just looking at numbers alone, 5 of 6 wards increased their machine turn-out, with only one ward- the fourth- showing a precipitous drop.

MACHINE TURNOUT NET INCREASE/DECREASE FROM 2015
FIRST WARD +64
SECOND WARD +181
THIRD WARD +362
FOURTH WARD +26  [*update]
FIFTH WARD +257
SIXTH WARD +75

The increased turnout in the First and Sixth wards was nominal. But clearly, the Third Ward race was energized  by Mike Russo having an opponent, Ron Bautista (Russo ran uncontested in 2015) and so was the Fifth ward 3-way race.

So, GA's verdict is... voter turnout yesterday was nominally better than 2015.

But, still a shameful fraction of Hoboken's registered voter population.

Example: my ward, the Sixth, has approximately 4,000 register voters; 1,227 voted on the machines.  So, big deal-- 75 more voters turned out yesterday than in 2015. What about the rest

Stay tuned, more to come.
