According to sources, Hoboken City Clerk Jimmy Farina and his Assistant Jerry Lore ran into Council incumbent Mike DeFusco a couple of days ago at Marine View Plaza, when BOOM: the Councilman allegedly unleashed a screaming, cursing tirade at Farina, in public.
That anecdote quickly swept through City Hall; I heard about it from several sources. What pissed off the Councilman? Apparently the City Clerk had filed a Pay-to-Play complaint against him for violations of Hoboken's local ordinance. Well, never thought THAT would happen.
Should we be surprised? Last January, the Hoboken City Council unanimously created a Pay-to-Play Compliance Officer. The Compliance Officer was tasked with reviewing ELEC reports for compliance with the Hoboken ordinance. But I digress....
Anyway, GA filed an OPRA for documents and communications related to this complaint. I expected to get back a dozen pages at most- instead my request returned 390 pages! GA was not the only one. John Heinis of Hudson County View wrote an excellent summation of the Hoboken City Clerk's complaint today:
"Farina says that back in 2017, when DeFusco ran for mayor, he received $37,800 from political action committees, with another $44,600 coming in from committees in connection to the November 5th council race."
DeFusco has not yet been charged. The Honorable Presiding Judge Peter Bariso of Hudson County Superior Court is reviewing the complaint for probable cause. If Bariso finds probable cause, then the charges will be remanded back to municipal court. Obviously, not in Hoboken!
Again, please keep in mind that Councilman DeFusco has not yet been charged.
The full complaint and supporting documents returned by OPRA are public record:

Whoops!
ReplyDeleteDeFusco's unseemly public screaming cursing tirade in front o Marine View Towers with two of the most even tempered, nicest and well liked people not only in City Hall but Hoboken will hurt him on election day.
ReplyDeleteWe’ve seen his tantrums before. He doesn’t possess the emotional maturity, wisdom or gravitas to be an elected official at any level, let alone mayor. Lorre and Farina are loved by all, and if DeFusco doesn’t like being called out for his illegal, non-compliant actions, he should have thought of that before he decided to commit these violations.
ReplyDeleteNo, he should never have another crack at being mayor, and first ward voters should make sure he doesn’t get re-elected.
The boys in North Bergen will be up late this Halloween evening, trying to put the unleashed evil back in the bottle.
BOO!
But Mike is the real victim in all of this. I'm not surprised he hasn't weaponized LGBTQ caucus to declare this charge as homophobia.
ReplyDelete*I'm surprised he hasn't...
