Congratulations, Ladies + Phil!
Former Mayor Dawn Zimmer lead Reform in Hoboken for 8 years, then made the wise choice of tapping then-Councilman Bhalla to run for mayor in her place. After that, Zimmer left Hoboken politics for private sector work, resurfacing every now and then at civic events, like she did recently at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Northwest Park.
Politically speaking, since 2017 our former mayor has not put her finger on the scale for any Hoboken candidate-- until now. Former Mayor Zimmer would not be inclined to endorse anyone unless she felt strongly in favor of them. Take that to the bank. These are the candidates whom she trusts with the awesome responsibility of legislating for our Mile Square. These last two years of childish council infighting has only validated Zimmer's wisdom.
If there is a statement to go with, I will post here.
An awesome endorsement.
ReplyDeleteEven with Zimmer's repeated, emphatic endorsement for mayor, Bhalla only earned 32% of the vote. His administration has behaved unprofessionally at best, vindictive at worst. Her support of Bhalla and his candidate demonstrate that her values do not align with that of many Hoboken voters. Therefore, her endorsement of a council candidate is meaningless--in fact, potentially damaging.
ReplyDeleteIf her endorsement was so meaningless, you wouldn't have bothered to post anything at all.
DeleteI suppose if the Reform vote hadn't split in 2017, Jen's sad 14% would have gone to Bhalla, putting him at 42%. Reform never topped 47% of the vote (2013 mayoral race.)
DeleteAnd if DeFusco hadn't gotten a curious windfall of VBMs, his 29% might have gone to 25%.
With a field of 6 candidates, any of the losers would have been delighted to trade places with Bhalla's 32%, and that is the sore loser's refrain. As for Zimmer, true her endorsement will be persuasive among folks who liked her. Since Jen and Tiffanie have sold out to the Dark Side, call themselves "reform resistance" you never know. We'll find out soon enough!
You're right. I'll bet Fisher high fived her rabbits when she heard the good news! The fact that Nora didn't turn down this toxic endorsement is yet more evidence that she lacks the smarts for this job.
DeleteAnon @6:38, that's a sad image you painted of Fisher. Rattling around her two or three empty condos in the tea building with only rodents to socialize with. Kinda makes sense, given the dimwits on council she aligns herself with.
DeleteMath error. Correction: if Reform hadn't split, Jen's sad 14% would have gone to Ravi's 32% to get 46% of the vote (Zimmer won with 47% in 2013.)
DeleteAlas, the sore losers and crybabies and perennial victims and reform resistors (who would have loved to have won the election with 32% of the vote) brought back runoffs instead of doing the math.
On this anniversary of super storm Sandy, it bears mentioning that Bhalla has been carrying out the initiatives begun by Zimmer, and together with the 250 million dollar grant and everything else Zimmer set in motion, Hoboken's efforts for flood mitigation outpace even NYC.
ReplyDeleteNot one of the other mayoral candidates would have kept up the momentum, and they don't have the smarts or the skill sets even if they wanted to help Hoboken keep moving forward. We are so lucky none of the others were elected mayor.
Fisher's own building complex rejected any measures that would have prevented their property from being damaged in the future. They were so cocksure of their wealth and imaginary resiliency, they will be very surprised when insurance premiums are out of their grasp, and their property values drop due to Fisher's stated promise to vote on the Monarch, (for what, we and she can't know). This mishandling of the Monarch will mean the Barry boys win, Hoboken loses, and many of her neighbors will lose their views.
Nobody ever accused Fisher of being terribly intelligent.
DeleteFive very brave and good people have stepped up and put themselves out there to run for public office in Hoboken. I think they must be a little crazy to do it but I will happily be voting for one next week to continue to bring positive change to our little city.
ReplyDeleteyes
ReplyDeleteSo we all listened to Dawn Zimmer endorse Jen, Tiff, MDF just 4 years ago. We trusted her selections and insight then, what's to say she's not making 5 bad choices now? The fact Ravi still needs Zimmer to bail him out is telling... Zimmer endorsed Defusco.
ReplyDeleteI no longer vote in Hoboken. But, I'm as unimpressed with these choices as you seem to be.
DeleteThat aside, the current council members that these candidates are looking to replace really suck balls, so I'd rather give someone new a try and hope they're better than continue to support candidates who've shown me that they're terrible on the City Council and put themselves first.
Anon @ 10:19, “bail him out”? Seriously? Zimmer is highly regarded by those who know what she did for Hoboken, and what she didn’t do, which was to sell out the way DeFusco would have, and already had on some levels.
DeleteEndorsing or supporting the incumbents in the past was something many did as they were better than the incumbents seeking re-election at the time.
DeFusco seemed to be the better choice, and had not yet shown his true colors. He was calmer, closeted and was making all the right statements.
Now that we know who and what they are, and what they became when they were not picked by Zimmer to be her successor, and we’ve seen how they pissed away the last four years, it’s clear they must go.
