Nora continues family legacy; public service to Hoboken

Nora coordinates Art in the Park for the City of Hoboken and was a founding member and volunteer organizer of the Hoboken Uptown Farmers Market, for ten years.

NORA CONTINUES FAMILY LEGACY: SERVICE TO HOBOKEN
Hoboken families may know Nora as the City of Hoboken Coordinator for Art in the Park, others know her as a Founding Member and volunteer for Hoboken's Uptown Farmer's market. What you may not know is that she is carrying on a proud legacy of community service.

GA brings this up so you understand who she is and what she is made of. I cannot do this topic justice, but will share what I know.

Nora was born in Hoboken's Saint Mary's Hospital (now Hoboken University Medical Center) to parents Arturo O. Martinez and Pat Donnelly-Martinez  Both parents were  successful journalists; Nora's mom was Editor of the Jersey Journal, her dad was longtime reporter, editor, critic and columnist for the Star Ledger.

In spite of very busy careers and two kids (Nora's younger brother, Pete owns The Drum Den in the Neumann Leathers Building) both Arturo and Pat volunteered for the Hoboken community in a variety of ways over the years.

Nora's mom has served on the Board of the YMCA, and was also honored by The United Way.  When her husband, Arturo, passed away in 2016, Pat took over his gig as a volunteer at the Saint Francis Food Pantry, where she serves currently.
The late, great Arturo O. Martinez, proud U.S. Army veteran

As for Nora's Dad...

Books, writing, reading and literature were his passion.  He served for many years on the Board of  Directors of The Hoboken Public Library, and was President.  Arturo worked closely with the late Anna Roberts, wife of Mayor Dave Roberts; both were dedicated fighters for funding and programs and much-needed renovations to the once-dilapidated historic building.  Yep, a lot of Martinez- Roberts sweat-equity went into revamping that place.

Mission accomplished.

Martinez' and Roberts' enormous contributions have been instrumental in turning our once sad library into the flourishing public institution it is today. As a measure of their importance to this Hoboken institution, both were honored last year with a dedication ceremony. Our library's beautiful new reading room was dedicated to Arturo, and the library garden was dedicated to Anna.

GA was there; and surprised to see Nora, who is very modest about her family's prominence.  I did not know.

Now you know how the Nora-apple does not fall far from the family tree.  She will never brag or boast, but now that she is a candidate for public office (and the mud has started flying at her) it is important that folks know that she is the real deal.

Nora is not playing footsie with a County Boss,  looking to advance her political career.  Nora already has a career; public service is a calling.

CHARACTER MATTERS
It may be early, but Fisher's campaign has become extraordinarily mean.  Her online minions are diminishing the service and skills of the Bhalla slate, attacking their families, their physical appearance, making nefarious, unsubstantiated allegations gleaned from the Sacco PR Machine's oppo research.   The Fisher-Giattino-DeFusco-Ramos team are playing in a very dirty sandbox.

And while this blog covers the Dark Side of the street- political corruption, election corruption, pay-to-play, etc., it also speaks truth to ugly smear campaigns against good, honorable Hoboken families like the Martinez-DiBenedettos the Pagan-Milanos and the Cricco-Powells.

So, this is really a compare and contrast election. They are how they run.  And so far, it looks ugly.

  1. Let's hope Vision Media never learns their lesson. They've played in Hoboken politics for years, always with dirty, vile, negative campaigns. And while that sort of thing 'always works' elsewhere, it hasn't worked in Hoboken, in fact usually the opposite is true. Hoboken voters are generally smarter than that. We know BS when we see it and smell it.

    1. Trust me, they haven't. Their minions are already posting (very dumb) oppo research on Hudson County View, with moronic attacks on Nora, Cristin and Migdalia. The Hoboken electorate resembles Manhattan more than North Bergen. We don't like their kind of low brow, nastiness but you know the fish stinks from the head down.

Jen and Tiffanie should be deeply ashamed after running clean with Zimmer.

    2. Yeah, took a look over there and it's a mess. And anti-Italian. One handle is actually "La Familia", like everyone in Hoboken with a vowel at the end of their name is in criminal cahoots. Is it actually people working for Vision Media or is it just TS and KG being TS and KG?

    3. If you are working w/ TS, KG or VM, chances are you as a candidate are bad news for Hoboken.

    4. Anonymous 4:37.... pitchers and catchers.

rumor, innuendo, allegations, oppo research spread by TS, KG and RB come from somewhere, if you know where I mean. RB is real angry cause he juices scooters for a living.

    5. Text message to me from Tony Soares:

"I have not written or posted anything about and her family
So please stop allowing the TS accusations
      Thanks
      I appreciate it in advance"

    6. Tony was on the council with Cricco, before Roman's time. Vision Media are smart enough to see no value in dredging that inside baseball crap up about the uncle. Not many people who roll that way. Sucks to have a well-earned reputation.

    7. I'm glad Tony cleared that up.

GA - can you ask him whether he'd like to deny he's the one posting on HCV that Hoboken families with kids who attend or attended High Tech are racists who should be grateful to Nick Sacco and Joey Muniz?

Maybe you could ask him to text you each day clarifying which posts he would like to distance himself from. You could run a daily "Not Tony Soares" feature.

    8. Yeah, that would be entertaining. I'd like to know if he is the one who posted as "NotElectingTHAT" saying vebatim (emphasis not mine):

"Nora won’t get 5 votes on the waterfront
      Nobody is voting for THAT!"

As for the racist, elitist assumption that High Tech is full of white kids, couldn't be further from the truth: the racial, ethic and socioeconomic diversity of the student population is probably greater than any HudCO municipality. And here you have the Fisher gang assuming because the entry is competitive, that it must be white. Yikes.

I wish the Fisher minions would exclude children from their toxic rhetoric. CHILDREN are OFF-LIMITS.

    9. High Tech is ranked 9th out of 482 NJ public high schools for diversity. 50% of the kids are black or Hispanic and 70% are non white.

"Not Tony" is lying about the demographics of the school, but that's almost beside the point.

Calling families racists because their kids dont attend Hoboken High School is pretty darn offensive to an awful lot of people.

I can certainly understand why the Tony personality would not want to be confused with the"Not Tony one."

Perhaps instead of texting you Tony should complain to "Not Tony" and ask him to stop making Tony look so bad.

    10. it doesn't help that ts is closely associated with a far right blog that ruins the image of all of it's participants. you're automatically viewed as someone who doesn't mind wallowing in the lowest imaginable trump worshiping sewage to get what you want. very hard to convince people you wouldn't lie about anonymously taking cheap shots at anyone after selling out like that. same goes for md who doesn't seem to understand that the owner is no friend of lbgtq.

    11. "Not Tony" was out there destroying Tony's reputation and credibility long before the far right blog even existed.

    12. Another note this morning from Tony Soares:

      "Thank you for sharing that
On an (off the site note please )I like Nora , she invited me to her Christmas party but while I was on my way there my car had problem and I was so annoyed I just stayed home.
Nora's mom is a wonderful and dynamic person

      Mike Cricco is a friend
I don't know CcP outside Facebook
      But she seems very cool"

    13. Way back in the day "Not Tony' used to have a full time babysitter apologist "Not Carol" to smooth out the very rough, crude edges of his persona. Without a filter he has spun out of control and now is just an obnoxious and mean narcissist. Thankfully he is only hurting "Not Mike", "Not Tiffanie"and "Not Jen" with his comments on HCV. Thank you"Not Tony" for just being you.

  2. I have known the family forever. Salt of the earth. Nora is humble, kind, a doer not a talker. The lady has her own mind. She'll work her heart out for everyone whether they supported her or not.

  3. I'd like to turn the conversation back to the great woman this piece is about. Nora has so many positive attributes and with the benefit of working with some of Hoboken's greatest people -- Cristin Cricco-Powell, Lisa Sprengle, Migdalia Milano-Pagan and Phil Cohen, Hoboken will benefit immeasurably.

They are all educated, experienced, professional and talented. Nora and this diverse team will work to insure that we keep moving forward.
