Activist files ethics complaint against Mike DeFusco: "he violated City Ordinance he himself drafted and touted"
On August 20th and August 23rd respectively, Hoboken climate change activist Michael Watson reported violations of Mike DeFusco's new "ethics law" in a complaint to City of Hoboken Clerk Jimmy Farina and Division of Local Government Services Director Timothy Cunningham.
Who did Watson allege violated DeFusco's ordinance which the Councilman promised would "bar campaigning on taxpayer time?"
Mike DeFusco.
Props to Watson for taking action. He attended the August 7th Hoboken City Council meeting and witnessed Councilman DeFusco photographing the public to post on his political campaign's Facebook page. Which he did. During the meeting! The same meeting during which Councilman DeFusco introduced legislation to bar public officials from campaigning on the People's Time.
Watson has no problem speaking truth to power and standing up for what he believes (he's the founder of the Hoboken chapter of The Climate Mobilization) and felt compelled to report this transgression to the appropriate state and local authorities.
DEFUSCO ETHICS VIOLATION (COMPLAINT)
MORE VOICES ARE NOT BETTER WHEN THEY SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER
Folks, when I saw Councilwoman Fisher's Facebook post crowing about DeFusco's ethics ordinance (which she co-sponsored), I had to ask if the ordinance applied to her ally Mike DeFusco, who was caught in the act of posting on his campaign's social media during the council meeting (it's the account which he blocks members of the public.) And, to prove that Defusco was politicking, I provided the Councilman's email statement; his own words, that his social media is exclusively for political purposes.
Note, other than presenting inconvenient facts, GA was civil. I did not lob insults. But I sure got 'em! Because the Councilwoman had no answer to the obvious; she would not admit that what Mike DeFusco did was improper and a violation of his own ordinance. Our exchange is below, or you can view on Facebook.

DEFUSCO SAYS HIS SOCIAL MEDIA SERVES POLITICAL, NOT MUNICIPAL PURPOSES
Here (again) is the DeFusco admission that his social media accounts are an arm of his political campaign:
SELECTIVE ETHICS ENFORCEMENT
Team Ramos has no interest in actual ethics enforcement. If they were legislating ethics reform in good faith, they would enforce their own law blindly and impartially. But in fact, as you see from the Fisher Facebook exchange, this Council will selectively enforce bad faith legislation- deciding when and how it applies and to whom as the "self-regulating" (Fisher's words) Hoboken Deciders.
Well, not if the People step up and call them out.
The mayor was right not to sign bad faith legislation. But, it does eventually become law without his signature. And when it does, one may expect more ethics complaints to follow.
At the same meeting, DeFusco also jumped in to make a statement about another ordinance that's hanging out on the agenda pending 2nd reading. He made his prepared statement before Giattino interjected and/or he realized that that wasn't the ordinance that they were on (it was the next up). Don't know if his social media campaigning was the distraction that caused this faux pas or if he was not paying attention at the meeting for some other reason. Really, it's only a few hours a month, and he can't be bothered to keep up with what's going on right in front of him.
ReplyDeleteNot that anyone could blame Giattino and Fisher for trying to distance themselves from being said to be on the same ticket as Ramos and DeFusco, but having the same firm running your campaign and years of lock step voting records makes it all seem ridiculous.
