Bhalla VETO: "Council Members took an oath of office to be lawmakers, not lawbreakers"

Lay down with dogs, wake up with fleas!  Giattino, Fisher and Cunnningham must be scratchin' today...

Yesterday, Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla vetoed Mike DeFusco's unenforceable, illegal ordinance crafted in bad faith-- originally to fire Jason Freeman.  After blowback, DeFusco amended it, adding that it would take effect after John Allen or Jason Freeman quit; thus tying the mayor's hands from hiring a replacement.

Assistant Corporation Counsel Scott DeRosa issued two memos in total addressing this bush-league dreck.  In short, he warned the Council that they did not have the legal authority to regulate staffing in the mayor's office, and that the ordinance was invalid.

Did they listen? Of course not. The five bitter butt-hurts, who are rumored to be running as a  slate in 2019, ignored the City's legal department and passed the steaming pile of crud.

Hence, Mayor Bhalla vetoed it.

He wrote, "Each of the Council Members who voted to adopt this ordinance were placed on notice by the Law Department that the ordinance they were attempting to adopt was unlawful.  This advice was apparently ignored. The City Council Members took an oath of office to be lawmakers, not lawbreakers."

It is rather embarrassing to be called out for exceeding one's legal authority, and after they had been warned by the City of Hoboken Law Department.

What it means: instead of working for us, this craven bunch of bitter butt-hurts is soley focused on using their legislative powers to settle political scores. Unbelievable. Don't we all have enough problems with that imbecilic wrecking-ball occupant of the White House?  Honestly.  It is incumbent upon Hoboken residents to tell their ward Council representative that we expect better.

Other than a finger in the Mayor's eye, how does reducing his staff improve the day-to-day operation of Hoboken's Executive branch?  It doesn't. And they know it.  Just like the bad old days when the Mason gang tried to tank the hospital to hurt Mayor Zimmer, this crew keeps trying to hurt the operation of the City to hurt Mayor Bhalla.

This kind of vindictive abuse of power is not what Hoboken residents deserve.  We can do better.

  1. Today, President Trump announced that he was issuing an executive order denying federal employees small 2019 raises they were entitled to by law. Presumably he thinks that gives him another card to play to get his wall.

Playing politics with people's livelihoods is reprehensible.

    1. As much as an asshole move as that is, Trump at least probably has the legal authority to not provide federal workers with raises. And if he doesn't have that authority, one of the multitude of public sector worker unions representing federal workers will challenge that move, get it overturned and the workers will get raises retroactively plus their legal fees paid. Or, Congress will ignore Trump and give them the raises anyway (I am sure Democrats will insist upon this).

Trump is reprehensible but doing something probably w/in his authority. The CC is both reprehensible and doing something clearly outside of their authority.
