The real County Tax Formula

It may not surprise you to know that the municipalities supporting a 6th term for County Executive Tom DeGise have received the lowest  tax hikes in all of Hudson County.

In an 8 year period (2009-2017) the 'De-Gise municipalities': Bayonne, East Newark Boro, Guttenberg, Harrison, Kearny, North Bergen and Secaucus, have received tax total tax hikes ranging from 4% to 19%, with an average of 11%.

Conversely, the municipalities rejecting a 6th DeGise term, in favor of a new County Executive: Union City, Hoboken, Jersey City and West New York  have had the highest tax increases in that same 8 year period.

The 'Stack-municipalities' county tax increases range from 22% to 93% with the average increase of 62%.

Keeping it real... no tears for Union City's 93% tax hike; their county taxes are still ridiculously low.

11% average county tax increase (Keep DeGise!) versus 62% county tax increase (Dump DeGise!)

It's clear that municipalities who support Tom's daughter for HCDO Chair, want to maintain that bloated county budget and patronage  'cause Hoboken and Jersey City are paying for it.

Sure, we are.

Over the past 8 years, Hoboken's county taxes have soared by 88%.

Hoboken voters: any ELECTED OFFICIAL who supports a 6th DeGise term doesn't deserve to represent you. That group includes Councilpersons Jen Giattino, Tiffanie Fisher, Michael DeFusco, Ruben Ramos and Freeholder Anthony Romano.

When is enough, enough? Now.

Enough with officials who aren't looking out for Hoboken, who play footsie with North Bergen's Nick Sacco. Enough with the county using Hoboken residents for an ATM.

Maybe we should stop giving the County their share of PILOT payments. Let the County sue us.  Let the court decide if the current funding formula is fair and equitable to our City or if we are getting screwed.

Nothing will change unless we make it happen. Time to play hardball. Time for new leadership.

  1. In my opinion, anyone who supports DeGise is against the taxpaying residents of Hoboken. What side are you on Jen/Tiff/Mike? You with the taxpayers or the folks who mooch off us?

  2. Absolutely right. Jen/Tiff/Mike/Ruben are with the moochers. For no other reason than Ravi is not. That is what this Hoboken civil war has come to-- with Giattino and Fisher rolling out the welcome mat to Nick Sacco, and supporting county leadership that's hurting Hoboken-- 'cause Ravi is not.

  3. have team butthurt ever articulated their reasoning for supporting degise in light of this horrible track record on county taxes? while being anti-bhalla might be the actual reason, i'd like to know what their spin is. and if they haven't stated a position, they should be confronted with the issue in public/on social media and forced to justify their unjustifiable position.

    1. No stated position. Just sucking up to Nick Sacco- like their new pals, DeFusco and Ramos. Ramos' buddy is Joey Muniz, Sacco's closest political aide.

Giattino would not produce the communications I OPRAed- the emails regarding that "free " legal opinion she obtained from the Sacco attorney. Claimed "Attorney-client privilege." Well, there's a crime-fraud exception to that privilege (ask Micheal Cohen) which was implicated when she, as an elected official, accepted a gift of value (the opinion).

Fisher doesn't care anymore that her new pal DeFusco broke Hoboken's Pay-to-Play law so egregiously that she filed a lengthy (44-page) complaint against his campaign with the Election Law Enforcement Commission.

Does anyone think the "butthurts" care more about Hoboken than whatever axe they've got to grind, or whomever can help fund their next campaign? If so, think again.

  4. Not to harp on the irrelevant goings-on over on the site formerly known as a local news blog, but am I to understand that he is now citing Rory as a credible source and legitimate "man on the street" opinion? That seems like a real comedown for a blogger who was once discerning enough to call a loon like he saw it even if their POV was politically convenient.

    4. Oh, right. Sending creepy emails for days under a pseudonym is his idea of positivity?

  7. has hudson county published "the formula" they use to determine rates per city? i'd be curious to see it. is it based on population and property values? or household income? i assume hoboken pays more because income and property values are higher here than, say, bayonne. but what accounts for secaucus being so high, do they have income/property rates as high as hoboken?
