Giattino wants to remove handicapped parking spot for Juventus Club

Council VP Giattino argues to remove handicapped parking used by Juventus Club members, many of whom are elderly.

A curious exchange occurred at last week's Council meeting. It was during the 2nd Reading of an ordinance to remove 6 handicapped parking spots in total; 5 corresponded to specific people (name with address). However the 6th spot corresponded to a location (no name).

For some reason that didn't make sense to me,  6th Ward Councilwoman Jen Giattino was arguing for the removal of the 6th handicapped spot- the one tied to a location only. Note, Giattino is the Chair of the Parking and Transportation Subcommittee; presumably her subcommittee authored the Ordinance.

I didn't understand why Giattino wanted to take away a handicapped spot in her own ward.  Neither did Councilwoman Emily Jabbour.

Jabbour asked  Transportation and Parking Director Ryan Sharp, "..The last spot is for general use, and to your earlier point  Director you said that there's a shortage in terms of the city's compliance overall with having enough general use handicapped spots so why would we eliminate this particular spot if we're still not in compliance with ADA requirements?

He answered,"...I wouldn't recommend removing it unless there's a good reason.."

Council VP Giattino interrupted, "In the past we've never approved any of them that were not in front of a public building... "

False. According to Director Sharp, the handicapped spot in question was approved by the Council in 2016.  Which means Giattino was on the Council that approved the handicapped spot she was arguing to remove two years later.

Jabbour persisted, "But why would we remove this now, if there's several small businesses and clubs that use that spot on a regular basis.  Isn't that depriving them of the ability to have handicapped customers?"

"Well then," Giattino replied, "On the other hand we could say why aren't they [handicapped parking spots] in front of every business!"

"But if we are overall on the balance not providing enough [handicapped] spots," said Jabbour," at such time that we come up with that [holistic] plan, why would we eliminate one..."

"and, and..." Giattino interrupted, "..the one that we did in front of the library was specifically for library hours, so at night it still was a parking space."

Boy, oh boy! Giattino was really going to the mat to eliminate this particular handicapped spot. Why this one spot...?

A friend texted me later that night.
My favorite part of the night was when Jen could not/would not answer Emily's questions bout removing the handicapped parking spot. Jen and Ruben pushed to remove it because they are under the assumption that Leo Pelligrini got that spot. If you catch it, Jen asks who reminded you about the spot? They are mean and vindictive people. Yet they try to play victim all the time.
Leo? From someone else who watched the meeting:
The sole purpose of that [removing the parking spot] was Jen going after Leo Pelligrini for not supporting her for mayor. He's a member of the Juventus Club where the general handicapped parking spot is located. If you watch the video, Jen tries to play "gotcha" with Director Sharp for him to say that Leo pushed the spot. This is just another example of Jen being vindictive which is in itself awful, but in this scenario, she is trying to remove parking spots for handicapped people which is even worse.
Boy, that sucks.  It is hard for me to reconcile the people I used to know, with the people they are today.

Bhalla loyalist Hoboken Director Leo Pelligrini is a member of the Juventus Club

GA passes the Juventus Club frequently. I often see elderly folks there, some of whom may need that handicapped spot.

I'll say it again: boy, that sucks.

  1. She really is a petty person. Can you imagine the stunts she would have pulled as mayor?

If she wants to look holistically at handicapped parking, that is probably a conversation well worth having. I doubt it turns out the way she wants it to as there is probably a need for more, not fewer spaces, but still a conversation worth having. But focusing on this 1 spot out of spite is not only a massive waste of time, it also shows everyone exactly why she never should have been considered for mayor and why she can't get along w/ the current mayor. All she cares about is getting political payback. I'd bet she operates this way in real life too.

  2. she is sitting in her brownstone with one of those big murder boards connecting everyone (with red sting of course) who wronged her. At the center of the board is November 7th...

  3. Few people get involved in politics for purely altruistic reasons. Fewer still stay pure after they get a taste for power.

Giattino and Cunningham started off with good intentions (and they made important contributions to the progress led by Mayor Zimmer) but boy have they lost their way!

    1. I'd argue a few of them have gone from "mostly altruistic w/ a healthy dose of political ambition" to "purely motivated by spite and don't give a damn about anyone but themselves". We really are seeing these people at their absolute worst - though don't worry, I am sure they won't disappoint and will find a new low to sink to soon. That is the one thing this bunch is pretty good at. Just when you think things can't get any worse, they find a way to sink a bit lower into the cesspool.

    2. If I were a politician I'd be a sh*thead. I would absolutely be drunk with power. I'm truly unelectable though, so that is nothing for anyone to be concerned with.

  4. There are VERY few (I actually can't think of any, but I will take your word for it that they exist) street spots made available for general handicap usage. I live in that area, and some of the neighbors are surprised that this block is worthy of one (only one other business). it could very well be favoritism and if so that should be flushed out, and she represents the neighbors who want to know. I know she has been behind other legislation favoring special needs parking (street cleaning not applicable to handicap spots on Wash, etc), so the tone of this article comes across as a little childish.

    1. Hi, Unknown.

I'm in the 6th Ward, too. Did you watch the meeting? Frankly I didn't understand the vehemence behind removing this one handicapped spot, especially since it was pointed out that the city was deficient in handicapped parking. Per code, the city is literally hundreds to a thousand handicapped spots deficient. Given that, is it "childish" to wonder why the Council VP was so persistent to remove the spot, after she had approved it in 2016? I really didn't get it. Folks who contacted me later filled in the "Leo- Juventus" info-- a plausible explanation, given the nasty, petty and vindictive tone of the council. Would council members who have tried to hurt the mayor's aides economically, be so petty as to nix a parking spot they assume (or maybe know?) was requested by someone who was very helpful to Mayor Bhalla's election? YES.

Btw, if it is true that your neighbors are "surprised" there is a general handicapped spot, they should welcome it. Your handicapped neighbors can park there, too! The Parking Director said that by code, every Hoboken block should have one handicapped parking spot. I assume that will be incorporated into the holistic handicapped parking plan. Ok, going back to my playpen!

    2. Considering the number of people who enter that establishment that likely qualify for either permanent or temporary HC permits, the only part of this situation I find surprising is there is only 1 general HC spot.

But hey, not like Jen cares. None of those people likely voted for her and certainly none of them will ever consider voting in the future. Heck, isn't that half the reason she is so angry?.........nobody voted for her. So what does she care if she keeps alienating people. Not like she has any chance at reelection.

So keep it up Jen. The more you double down on being vindictive against people who you believe have slighted you, the easier the mayor will have it at recruiting your inevitable replacement.

    3. How dare you suggest Ms. Thang & "totes electable" Jen won't get votes, neigh [see what I did there] the MOST VOTES, of any candidate ever? She's surging as we speak!!!
