Why does it appear that Mike DeFusco wants to derail HPD investigation?

DeFusco running his own investigation with GoFundMe money

GA makes no accusations nor inferences here, but after watching last night's council meeting, I am scratching my head.

It's Day 11 of the Hoboken Police Department's bias crime investigation into November 3rd's "Terrorism Flyer."   The HPD is investigating all 6 campaigns and hate groups.

Yesterday, Ferrante told Hudson County View,
“I will reiterate, our detectives have been investigating this matter around the clock since Friday night, November 3rd. I am proud of the work they have done and how much evidence they have recovered.  “I continue to ask the public to please let us know if you can identify any of these individuals so we can find those responsible for this act!”
To any observer, HPD's investigators have made great progress in a relatively short time period of time. They already have hard video-evidence that they've shared with the public; the images are grainy but recognizable.

And that is only what the HPD have shown us. GA imagines there is much more they have not.

Further, a bias crime is a violation of 18 U.S. Code § 245 meaning that if our HPD needed help, state and federal agencies- the F.B.I., could be utilized.

So, it is very curious to GA why one of the parties being investigated by the HPD- Mike DeFusco's campaign- is soliciting money to run an independent "investigation."

That's right, DeFusco has not been cleared, no one has.  In which case, is it even proper for a person who is one of six candidates being investigated by local law authorities to be mounting his own?    Think about it.

HPD detectives are working 'round the clock (plus can access state and federal law enforcement agencies) so why is Mike DeFusco running  his own parallel investigation?

Now, offering reward money is a great idea; there's nothing like a big, sack of Benjamins to get people talking. GA fully supports any fundraising for reward money as long as 100% of donations will be used for that purpose.

Not here. Mike DeFusco's GoFundMe target is $15,000; he is offering only $5,000 for reward money.

Where is the rest going?

To Mike DeFusco's "investigation."

Here is a Facebook comment GA would like to share:
While I appreciate the stated intention here, based on my professional experience, I am troubled by this approach to discovering the perpetrator of a hate crime. Our police department has an active investigation into this matter.  In this case, this feels like a very politicized effort. I wonder if the investigator that Mike and his sister have hired and are asking us to support is cooperating with our police department? Is he or she running a parallel or cooperative investigation with our local PD? I worry about witness tampering and people with political motives injecting themselves into what needs to be a professional, sober, depoliticized investigation  Unless I hear that our Police Chief supports this effort and the investigator is cooperating with him and his Detectives, I will not support it. This is not how it works. I worry that Mike, hurt because he lost, is misdirecting his anger, and getting in the way of an important police investigation. I hope I am wrong and our PD views this effort as complimentary and useful. I would like to know the answer though before supporting it.
Bingo!

There is no reason for ANYONE to support this GOFundMe drive until it pledges that 100% of donations will go toward the reward.  End of story.

In GA's opinion, the only reason for Mike DeFusco to be running his "investigation" is because he wants a political outcome, or to interfere with the police investigation.

Last night's council meeting made it clear that efforts to de-legitimize the HPD were underway.

DeFusco loyalist Patty Waiters, who said that she missed her chemotherapy treatment to attend the meeting, demanded an "independent investigation" into the flyer, demanded that the investigation be removed from Chief Ferrante.   Okay...

Followed by the world-champion histrionics of Mike DeFusco: start at 1:59:19.

In 7 short minutes, DeFusco goes from sympathetic figure to grandstanding jerk, demanding in real time that Ravi "stand with him" and donate to his fund. Kaching.

(By not agreeing then and there to shell out for DeFusco's private investigator, DeFusco then accused Ravi of not "standing with him." )

DeFusco even beseeched the public to give "even $5" to his fund.

Do not give him a penny, people. Not a dime. Not until he changes his 'funding formula".

Of course, Ravi said "no" because he trusted Chief Ferrante and the HPD to complete the investigation.

So do I.

In the meantime, let's all let our police department do their work.

Hoboken's brave men in blue- I trust  Chief Ferrante, why doesn't Mike DeFusco?  Weird, huh?

Comments

  1. Mike is not trying to solve a crime. And he's not trying to clear his name. He's engaging in a political stunt intended to keep his victimization story alive in a feeble attempt to de-legitimize Ravi's victory.

I get that he genuinely thinks he was "robbed" - that he would have won but for the flier. That's almost certainly untrue, but losing candidates often cling to fictions like that.

But the time has come for him to get up, put on his big boy pants, and move on. All the ward council people face re-election two years before Ravi does and if they take a long hard thoughtful look at the data from this election they will realize that taking re-election for granted and looking ahead to the next mayoral would be extremely shortsighted.

The only relatively "safe" ward Councilman is Ramos. Even Russo is at risk given the huge turnout in the western portion of the 3rd ward which could potentially, for the first time, outvote his church towers base.

A Trumpian move. Suspicious. How about letting the police do the investigating?

    6. Another weird thing, if true. I heard that DeFusco keeps calling the investigators at all hours of the day and night... kind of like a person worried where the investigation is leading. I think Mike's PI is supposed to provide a counter narrative to the HPD investigation.

Also, listen to his Council schtick-- he asks the public to contribute but never says the donations are going to his private investigator. He only talks about funding the reward. So dishonest!

I can't wait until Chief Ferrante and Captain Campbell find the culprits.

  2. Not for nothing, but I will say what others cannot for good reason, he looks like the Skel that did the crime, that is trying to "help" the Police find the "real" criminal. The good thing is that the local PD are very aware of when anyone exhibits this behaivor. It is very Trumpian. He needs to BACK OFF from "helping" the police, he has made his righteous indignation known, time to stop blowing that horn, settle down, and do his share of work on the Council. I don't envy Ravi at all, having to navigate the sandbox with so many injured children.

    3. IMO, if Mike DeFusco really wanted to find the perp, he'd offer the whole $15K he's raising for a reward, and he'd support the HPD effort. His drive for public sympathy reads like a PR stunt. And the fact that he is doing everything to point the finger of guilt at Ravi.

  3. From Nicole's cover letter for the Go Fund Me page:

"We are raising money to help clear Michael’s name and bring the criminals responsible to justice. We are offering a reward for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons behind this attack on both Michael and Ravi’s good names. We all deserve to know the truth about who was behind the fliers – our democracy depends on it. "

It doesn't say they are only using the money to offer a reward. But that is the only concrete use it does identify. I don't think anyone reading that would have guessed that only 1/3 was for the reward and the rest was for other unspecified measures.

There was also no disappointment expressed with HPD in Nicole's letter. The usual yahoos do that online, but they are of no account. I could only stomach about 2 minutes of Defusco saying "what it's like to be me now" and making it some kind of litmus test of Bhalla's humanity the he contribute to paying Defusco's PI, so I didn't hear if he went on to disrespect the PD or otherwise explain why $2 of every $3 raised needs to go to doing the job the PD isn't up to doing.

I won't say the GFM was a bait and switch, but that it could have been more transparent. I also appreciate some of what I read online today about interfering in hate crimes investigations. Nevertheless, when Nicole came to this site, I had sympathy for her as a noncombatant pulled into the crap of Hoboken politics. It's something I have to think about for my own family every time one of two bitter assholes puts my name online. So I kicked in a few bucks. It wish more were going to the reward, or that there were a way to contribute solely to the reward. But it wasn't so much that it's worth going crazy over.

Good luck with Defusco. He sputters liberal catechism like a champ; and like all catechists, he's long since stopped thinking whether the words mean anything. Hence he has convinced himself that a gay man can't be a racist. He's a fool. But as RB suggests, hopefully self-preservation will get the CC, Defusco included, back to doing something besides grandstanding. They're up for election next, not Bhalla.

    1. You are right. The GoFundMe says nothing about paying for Mike DeFusco's private investigator- why do you think that is? At the Council meeting when he attacked Bhalla for not donating to his fund, he only talked about reward money. There has been a conscious effort to hide where 2/3 of the money is going, how it is being administrated-for Mike''s "investigation". Why do you think that is?

The notion of raising reward money is fine- I think it is helpful. And Mike can hire as many PIs as he wants-on his own dime. Hoboken taxpayers are already underwriting the HPD time and materials they are expending to catch the perp. HPD time isn't "free."

Remember, Mike had no issue with darkening Ravi's photo- his skin, his turban to invoking racist fears of Bhalla in his original, untampered flyer. That scary Bhalla that Mike created on his flyer was an open door that some criminal piece of scum walked through. Now, Google Bhalla's name and see the crazy, racist hate site's articles about his alleged allegiance to Allah, etc. It is comforting to see how Ravi is handling the fallout from dangerous hate groups- which endanger his family. Seeing how Mike is handling the fallout, it is also comforting to know that Hoboken did not elect him.

I have every confidence Hoboken's HPD will find out who did this terrible thing.

Wish it were a joke. But when you think of the personalities of the core group keeping the lights on over there, they have very little simpatico between them.

One supports Defusco and, independent of that does not really respect the other two major participants. But he has no place else to go.

One is a democrat, hence no friend of the alt-right and a Giattino supporter who would eventually have been aghast at the city Defuscoville became.

Both he and the proprietor gave a pass to Defusco's financial and HCDO supporters (and we'll have to see what he's final ELEC's show), though that has never been their habit and certainly didn't happen with Bhalla.

Then you have the current lease-holder of the DawnGone handle whose musings sound remarkably similar to those of a certain disappointed math expert, but not tidied up for facebook.

Finally there's the proprietor, who tamped down his alt-right crusade during the campaign. I expect it to start seeping back in here in there.

All this by way of saying the only glue that holds the place together is Zimmer/Bhalla bashing. Without that, they share no common ground and would soon be bashing each other if either's fortunes improved.

So expect at least 6 more weeks of vive la resistance! If that translates into cc behavior, you can expect to hear vive les ex-cc members! What works on a blog doesn't work out so well for those paid to do the people's business.

  6. It's worth noting that this self appointed leader of the fictional resistance movement still serves on the board of the NHSA. His job there is to work with the other two Hoboken commissioners and the mayor to protect hoboken's interests.

When unified, Hoboken has veto power - nothing can happen without Hoboken's consent.

The contract of the executive director is expiring so the Board will soon have the most important decision it is tasked to make on it's agenda.

The conflict of interest here is manifest and extremely disturbing, as was a certain mayoral candidates reported threat to not reappoint another NHSA commissioner who was supporting a rival candidate.

    7. Numbers Cruncher- There is indeed a very important vote today on the NHSA. My fellow commissioner who is on the finance subcommittee and a Ravi Bhalla supporter has reached out to me about the ongoing negotiations with respect to the executive director's contract which is not yet expired. I will not go into details until I see the final product or publicly discuss negotiations in progress but suffice it to say the two of us are working together just fine.

Based on my extensive experience working with HR departments over the years I advised my fellow commissioner to bring up several points in the subcommittee meeting as to compensation package and benefits package to ensure we had our bases covered.

If you have any feedback from the Mayor or Mayor Elect before the vote please feel free to reach out to me privately. Keep in mind just because neither the Mayor or Mayor elect did not support me as commissioner does not mean I can not work with them.

I know Ravi wants the third pump and that is not happening without the NHSA. I am on that board to ensure that project happens. I pushed the NHSA a bit to do something about Madison Street sewer line between 8-11th and that project is concluding its design phase this February 2018.

As far as reappointments go Ravi has a 2-7 minority council. That is the political reality.

    8. Who the hell are you, HobokenR, to declare that Ravi has a "7-2 council"? Do you know something the rest of us don't? No, you don't. Go back to the wilderness of your own creation, that is a political reality.

    9. I think the reality is that Ravi will end up with a 5-4 majority with Russo providing the swing vote, for a price. Cunningham is no fool, and provided Ravi is the mayor we expect him to be, Cunningham will vote with him for what's right. Jen and Mike D might do likewise. Tiffanie, I'm convinced, is too dumb to get on board. I predict a 1 and done for her.

I hope Tiffanie proves me wrong.

    12. GA- As of today Ravi has a 2-7 City Council. For that reality he and Dawn have no one to blame but themselves. I expect the path to a 5-4 to be quite possible and it will depend on Ravi's ability to unite after a rough election season. Jen, Peter and Tiffanie will not do anything against Hoboken's interests. That will also include voting down Stronger Foundation's vision for dense residential development at NJ Transit should it ever come up; you know the PAC that gave Ravi at least $50k in TV advertising timed to start right after the final debate. Getting to 6 votes for bonding for "Hoboken's Infrastructure Mayor" (an initiative I support) will not be as easy however. There is however much common ground to be worked through in spite of that fact. Checks and balances will hopefully ensure Stronger Foundations will not get their wish even though their man Ravi got elected.

Unlike you, I will not resort to personal attacks and am starting a fresh website with a focus on policy and how to move forward. I have not provided my link like you have have done on many websites so I don't get the criticism.

    17. Kurt the reality is that the Council is 2-7 right now with everyone understanding that it could be flipped to 5-4 based on the election results and the process of flipping it will begin about a year from now if necessary based on the Jen coming in third in the 2nd, 5th, and 6th wards. Also, as pointed out by numberscruncher, based on the results, flipping the 1st and 3rd wards is feasible too. My guess is that Ravi's willing to put in the time and resources to do so, and that raising the resources to do so will not be a huge lift for an incumbent. So yes you're right, it's 2-7 Council, but all the rest is reality too. From my perspective it's a one year process for everyone to figure out whether Ravi runs candidates with his endorsement in all wards or in some but not others. A coalition of qualified candidates exists in all wards. They will have resources and professional support if they run with Ravi's endorsement.

    19. Election or not, at the end of the day we have 10+ years of Peter being for a better Hoboken and 6+ years of Jen voting for a better Hoboken. Ravi, with 8 years on the council and showing he was for a better Hoboken will likely lead it, as mayor, the same way. So for Jen and Peter to stop voting with Ravi would be foolhardy unless Ravi suddenly changes course. There should be no 2-7 council issue.

The questionable people are Tiffanie, Defusco, Russo.

    21. All Hoboken - I agree that 5-4 is the most likely outcome and I am hopeful we get there. It's just 2-7 today but you did see a reasonable outcome last council meeting where eminent domain was approved for use as a tool for current Mayor Zimmer. Yet Tiffanie does not get credit for casting the right vote from these commenters.

Nancy- Calling someone that for years has lurked behind the scenes and opined many a time via email or via text via government issues the "Shadow" is hardly a personal attack. I have the Carmelo Garcia themed emails with Jake Stuiver to prove it that are now part of the public thanks to rampant use of email or as they say in law school 101 evidence mail.

I do respect others opinions but I do not support candidates supported by big Super Developer PACs or irresponsible PILOTS. Ravi had his pluses for sure (raisinng lots of money from the outside) but I weighed in the factors and supported the underdog candidate who best represented my "local" views. Period.

Your electable candidate won 33% of the vote so congratulations. I am am firm believer in checks and balances and dissenting views. I am even now blow up doll friendly thanks to your input and advocacy, I still don't own one despite all of your assertions to the contrary.

  8. Here is what I find weird and disturbing about Kurt Gardiner’s comments on this blog.

Kurt Gardiner is a public official and a public figure. His comments on this site conflates his role as a representative of the City with his personal political grudges. He discusses his role as a public figure and in the same posts hurls personal insults. The depiction of GA as a blow up doll being engaged in sexual antics with the Mayor’s husband was far below the minimum standard of conduct for any public official. I don’t care how much he hates GA. (The she said it first routine is tedious, trite and beside the point; GA is not the public figure, Kurt Gardiner is.)

GA had her issues with some of her content while she was on the ZBA (see turd in the punch bowl uproar and the infamous Easel with an Easel side show), and there were cries for her to step aside. To her credit, she acknowledged that her role as a private citizen with raucous and sometimes ribald views of political life in Hoboken (which , IMO she satirizes brilliantly and Kurt Gardiner, not so much) did not necessarily jive and she wisely declined (IMO) to be reappointed to either the ZB or as a delegate to the Hoboken Dems (even though that is not an official position, but does come with the facet of representing others in the political process).

Kurt Gardiner is now in the same place and he should think long and hard about what he posts, both where he posts it and the contents of his posts. I can envision a large howl erupting if he seeks to be reappointed to his seat on the NHSA. Before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, if he was first seeking a seat on the board and had refused to take down the offensive blow up doll graphic or apologized profusely for it, then imagine how his application would be met. Remember, the Mayor’s husband is depicted as the sex partner of blow up doll GA. WTF does he have to do with Kurt Gardiner’s beef with GA? Kurt Gardiner owes both the Mayor and her husband a public apology, again, IMO.

Kurt Gardiner’s application would be DOA, and rightly so. My comments are not about political correctness, but about public officials taking responsibility for their actions as representatives of the public. Kurt Gardiner can say anything he wants to say as a private citizen, and post whatever stupidly gross misogynistic graphics he wants, as a private citizen. I wonder why he didn’t have the Mayor’s husband as a blow up doll and GA being the human sex partner. Think about that before anyone screams that I am invoking misogyny as a stunt.

To say that I am disappointed in Kurt Gardiner as my representative is an understatement. However, he is a giant of a guy and he is free to make his own decisions about his dual role as a private person who can be caustic, sometimes rude and condescending, and edging on vile and his obligations to the residents of Hoboken. His decisions are his own, regardless of how poorly I may believe those decisions to have been made and acted upon. At a minim, IMO, he should NOT be posting on your site extoling his services as a public representative, especially when he has launched a multi-platform jihad to destroy your character and reputation. You too, are one of the people of Hoboken that he represents. BTW, fuck off, Indie.

He does not get to pick and choose as our representative to the NHSA who and what he likes to target for insults and abuse. Having accepted the positon on the NHSA, he also accepted the limitations that come with the job. He conflates his role as a public official with his private persona. Becoming a public official means one has chosen to abide by certain standards of conduct. Engaging in personal insults and attacking the mayor (or her husband) is incompatible with his obligations as an NHSA to represent the City of Hoboken

I don't agree with elected officials engaging in online antics, but appointed officials have a lower bar IMO & commissioners to a sewer authority may have the lowest bar of all. It is, after all, a shit appointment.

All of  what I wrote was from my perspective and my opinion. I said that Nancy crossed the line with some her stuff as a ZBA member and, IMO, stood down when her terms expired. I think that Kurt Gardiner is in the same position.  To me, the depiction of the Mayor’s husband engaged in a sexual situation with GA as a blow up doll went way further over the line than anything GA ever did. The personal invective that he hurls at Nancy, which is still going on this evening on another internet platform, is bizarre, and IMO, troubling.  I don’t care what comes from a shit filled stall in the barn or out of the horse’s ass, as he is just a private person.  Kurt Gardiner, on the other hand, even if it is just a lowly shitty NHSA position, is another breed. Again,  all just MO.

    3. Under QOTV. I thought there was some morals clause out there that I was unaware of. As for "other platform". . . now I'm going to have to search the internet to find it. Sigh.

    4. It does seem as if the "resistance" cares less about politics than settling personal grudges.

  10. Many of the writers on this blog seem to be very talented, extremely knowledgeable, and also fun to read. I am none of those, but as a simple Hoboken Resident, Gawdam that was great to see Nancy tell Gardiner to Fu ck Off!! Dude, you have a web site, good for you, I wish you as many unique participants as you can get in your own echo chamber, as you continue to use long flowery sentences and paragraphs to placate your pain and turmoil as you sit in your own echo chamber. To my uneducated eye, it looks like you and Mr Brice have had some kind of unresolved and most certainly unrequited CRUSH on Miss G, and now, like vanquished Knights in your own eyes, are taking up the good fight to protect her honor, and your own frustrations, to continue fighting for her. Frankly, you both appear as grown up, over educated, little boys. Looking forward to never seeing you post on this site again.

  12. The beauty of having your own blog Mr G is that you always get to have the last word. AND calling THIS blog an echo chamber is RICH considering you cast your lot with that dead blog in the stall. My wish for Christmas, is a return for yourself, and the other good people of Hoboken, in working together to make Hoboken a great place for us all. I know you have the ability and desire to do so, so stay away from the Horse, he brought out the worst in you, and I wish you well in being a instrument of positivity for Hoboken.
