If the gloves don't fit!

Is anyone else finding the DeFusco camp's rush to solve the case on the blogs and in the media odd?

As an avid watcher of Investigation Discovery, GA knows that criminal investigations can take a long time.

As an avid watcher of Rachel Maddow, sometimes efforts to thwart an investigation become the crime- it's called "obstruction of justice."  That includes "witness tampering".

So, what exactly is going on here?

First, the offer of a "reward" to find the real killer- oops, I meant the Mastermind of the Dastardly Flyer ("MDF" for short).. but only $5,000 of the $15,000 fundraising target is reward money, the other 2/3 going to find the real killer- oops, I meant MDF (Mastermind of the Dastardly Flyer).

In the meantime, escalating hysteria from  MDF (Mike DeFusco) plus online operatives pointing fingers and hooves at  Ravi Bhalla and his supporters (including me), resemble a political operation more than a good faith effort to help the police find MDF (Mastermind of the Dastardly Flyer).

Well, what kicked this up to a whole new level was yesterday's press release

Imagine that...

During an active police investigation Mike DeFusco alerted the videotaped suspects in the press that the police were coming.

During an active police investigation, Mike DeFusco alerted the suspects that someone ratted them out; perhaps someone whose identity is obvious.

Not only has this press announcement literally tampered with the police investigation, could it rise to  obstruction of justice?

GA doesn't know. But, in my view, churning out press releases lauding yourself as 'solving' a crime during an active police investigation is very, very strange.

Read this press release. Note the certitude with which MDF (Mike DeFusco) proclaims he has identified of all of the suspects in the police video!

Really? How?

Aren't they alleged suspects?  How is MDF (Mike DeFusco) so certain?  Is he sending the police on a wild goose chase?

In GA's opinion, this press release is not to help the police find MDF (Mastermind of the Dastardly Flyer), it's a PR stunt.

So why did MDF (Mike DeFusco) put out this press release?

DEFUSCO PRESS RELEASE

  1. I wouldn't call it odd but it's completely inconsistent with cooperating with the police. It's nothing but political grandstanding and it has almost certainly compromised the real investigation.

The only question is why he would not just work with the cops and let them follow the evidence, assuming there actually is any, wherever it leads. Does he really think he's helping by grandstanding? Does he really think his grandstanding so far has benefited him? Does he actually think more grandstanding will benefit him?

I really thought DeFusco was smarter. There's an awful lot of stupidity going around lately.

    Is stupidity contageous?

  2. There needs to be a monopoly of power in any negotiation. In particular there needs to be only one person to speaks to legalities and consequences. Defusco has set up a situation where you can talk to him or the cops. Why was that necessary? Just makes things more complicated for the professionals when non-professionals insist on participating.

Whatever the case, between the Butt-hurt-for-Life Giattino crying party and the recklessness encouraged by Defusco, you now have people now making extremely careless statements like this one:

Ravi doesn’t bring up the flier because he benefited from the sympathy vote and one of his supporters likely distributed it – thsts why he is trying to move on quickly. Chief Ferrante, who was quickly escalated from lieutenant to chief under the current administration and whose fiancĂ© is a state assemblywoman under the current administration, has everything to lose if Ravi’s Campaign is connected to this. The Chief was even quoted in the NYT celebrating the victory, is this a fair investigation? Nobody likes winners that need a crime to win….

He is citing a conspiracy between the Mayor's office and the Chief of Police to quash evidence of Bhalla's role in the production and distribution of the fliers. That crazy enough for ya?

It's time for the grown-ups - which hopefully means Defusco, Giattino, and Fisher - to tell the angry children who support them and who think they're "helping" to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up. This is way out of hand.

DeFusco, Giattino, and Fisher are the angry children. What is it you said we should say to the angry children??? Shakespeare said the Man doth protest too much NO?

    1. Social media addicts have zero patience for process. I'm hoping that's why (given the options) Defusco can't keep his trap shut and let the PD do its job. But can't rule out the darker possibilities of "protesting too much."

Anyhoo, nice to see you here. I thought you were one of the winners in this election cycle just by sticking to your guns and staring down the dirty tricksters.

  4. Personally, I don't care much about this kind of nonsense when it's being spouted on blogs by irrelevant self important idiots with delusions of grandeur.

But when this nonsense is peddled by elected officials, as I've heard it has been, it becomes truly concerning.

I wonder if the people spreading this nonsense by word of mouth fully understand that defamation doesn't require written publication to be legally actionable?

    1. If you're referring to the comment I posted, it's no different from what is said on Defusco's FB page - where he never tells the commenter to take it down a notch, pump the brakes, etc. And not because he isn't responding to other commenters. Ergo, it's a choice to let rhetoric become overheated and not respond to it and let it spill into the emerging general contempt for the PD. In which case, there's more to it than delusions of grandeur.

    2. Actually I was not referring to Councilman DeFusco. I was referring to another elected official who seems to inhabit the same loony echo chamber as the self important wackos.

    3. I am also fully aware of someone as an elected official calling my business "Illegal" could perhaps face a lawsuit for saying such a blatant lie to the entire public at a debate.
