In the Jewish religion (or GA's variant), a gravesite remains unadorned with a tombstone until the 6-month anniversary of the death.
After a 6-month period, mourners gather around the gravesite. Then the head stone, cloaked in cloth, is unveiled. This ceremony is, not surprisingly, called an unveiling.
Tonight, not 6-months later but 16 years, Hoboken will have an unveiling for 56 headstones of glass.
56 headstones of glass, one for each of the husbands, wives, sons, daughters, boyfriends, girlfriends, friends and neighbors who left on the PATH or the Ferry to work on September 11, 2001 and came home in our hearts.
On a beautiful day like today.
GA wishes to thank all of the hands who, from nothing, created this stunning, majestic memorial for them. Many have already received public accolades, like Mayor Zimmer.
One person who deserves special thanks is former Hoboken Mayor Dave Roberts, who played an instrumental behind the scenes role in getting political support for funding the memorial on the Hoboken City Council.
Oh yeah, a certain member of the City Council needed some arm-twisting.

Call him Dave "the Twister" Roberts.
Roberts also recommended the architect, Demitri Sarantitis, whose creative re-use of the 3" thick, 72h" high glass panels the city had purchased for a prior design, is stunning. Thank you, Dave Roberts- I love this architect's work.
Well folks, if you would like to attend tonight's unveiling, it's at 6 PM in Pier A Park.
Always felt bad for the families as years went by and we couldn't manage a proper memorial. Well done at last.
ReplyDeleteKudos, Dave.

DeleteBummed I couldn't make it, my thoughts go back to the days after the attack with all the signs of people looking for any news of their missing loved ones. I tried to remember if I saw any on the path on the way to work but couldnt.
