Shooting Death in Hoboken home of former BoE candidate - UPDATED

Updated- Thursday, 3/3/2016

Posted yesterday on The Hoboken Reporter:
"The man found dead at his Grand Street apartment in Hoboken almost exactly a month ago has been identified by law enforcement as 51-year-old Leonid Markevitch. His cause of death has been ruled a suicide, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Leo Hernandez told The Hoboken Reporter on Wednesday afternoon."
No date has been posted  for Markevitch's memorial service.

Updated- Thursday, 2/4 1:05 PM

No official word nor update from the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, but the shooting victim's obituary has been posted online.

R.I.P., Mr. Markevitch.

Updated- Tuesday, 2/2 1:05 PM

Folks, the only thing I can glean from the silence of The Hudson County Prosecutor's office is the investigation is ongoing.  They have not yet released the victim's name.  Repeating anything one hears may compromise the investigation, so best say nothing.

Updated- 7:45 PM

Crime scene tape gone, police gone. Everything back to normal- or is it?

What happened?

I am sure the neighbors and folks nearby (hint hint) would like some assurance the suspect is not at large.

Hopefully the Hudson County Prosecutor's office will have an update tomorrow.

Cyber-toilet, rumor-mongering Hoboken411 has published the [alleged] identity of this morning's shooting victim.

GA is waiting for official release of his name, which should occur after family has been notified.

HOBOKEN, N.J. – A man was fatally shot inside a Hoboken apartment early Monday, making his death the first reported homicide in the New Jersey city in three years.  The shooting occurred after 1 a.m. at 706 Grand St., police said.
GA was shocked to hear of today's shooting which occurred, literally around the block.

The address reported, 706 Grand Street, is the home of a well-known civic activist and Hoboken school board candidate in 2010 and 2012 races.   The victim is reported to be a middle-aged man.

What happened?

My sympathies to the family and friends of the victim, whose name has not yet been released in the media.

  1. Klaussen always had leaks at HPD. I sincerely hope that's stopped under Ferrante - or that he deals with it decisively if it is happening again.

    1. Ferrante has plugged HPD report-leaking. Should anyone believe what they read on Hoboken411? Klaussen is a reckless, truth-challenged misanthrope, with little to gain from dropping the victim's (alleged) identity online. A few more hits, maybe? That site is deader than Elvis.

  2. Perry Klaussen seems to have the need to constantly prove he is a low-life dirt bag.

    1. Pervy doesn't need to prove to Hoboken residents he is a low-life dirtbag. They're already convinced.

  3. If there were a killer on the loose, I'd think the PD would have to notify the pubic by now. I am assuming they know what happened.

    1. The HPD doesn't seem too concerned with the bodies in the Hudson, what makes you think this would be different?

    2. snoopster, I don't think that's fair. Ferrante created a new unit to patrol the waterfront, and cameras have been fixed. The autopsy of Genovese will determine if foul play was involved.

    3. I just meant they write off the two men who went into the Hudson as suicide immediately. I read his wallet and keys were found in the snow. Where was his cell phone? It just doesn't smell right. But maybe they were suicides.

    4. I know we all hate Beth Mason and she certainly gave people enough reasons to do so but at a City Council meeting back on November 16th of last year she made a fuss about the hundreds of thousands of dollars that the City had spent to have seventy cameras installed over the last few years a and and none of them worked. It took another hundred and fifty thousand dollar grant and Chief Ferrante to get eight sort of working but not really well before this latest tragedy. Apparently the HPD brass knew that the cameras didn't work, the vendor they picked walked away leaving the system dead and hid the fact. Also dead is another young Hoboken man and we have no answers as to why.

  4. As long as there is a Falco in the HPD Pervy Perry the fluffier of Klaussens will always get a leak. The self entitled children of the former chief will undoubtedly spew their venom on Hoboken's Nazi truck Beth Mason bout and paid for Lane Bajardi editorial con trolled excuse for a smear yellow journalism website.

3 murders not including the Mayor's father in law run down in a botched investigation by Captain Falco in the last decade and a half. Pretty safe town. My bet this will be a non random event when the truth comes out.

    1. So true. And then there was the serial rapist that We didn't hear about until after their arrest. We think. "Ongoing investigations" don't make it to the police blotter and therefore aren't picked up by media outlets. But as long as real estate prices remain high, that's what's important, right? Murder by arson, unsolved rapes, young men tossed off piers...nothing to see hear folks, keep moving. Stay young, dumb and drunk. We got this. Meet, marry, move to Montclair. That's how it's done in Hoboken.

  5. It was quite simple to ascertain the name of the victim when the news stated it was a single family home with the address, people in town know who lives there, and people like me can just plug in the address in the tax assessors website to see who owns the address.

    1. We don't know if the victim was an intruder, a visitor, the homeowner. I wouldn't assume the identity of the victim, even though we know who the homeowners are.

    2. It's pretty odd for the name to be kept secret. Its typical for the police to wait a couple of hours before releasing the name so that the family can be notified but the identity of a shooting victim is public information.

Withholding the name, an extremely unusual step, just feeds the conspiracy theorists who think there's Hoboken serial killer on the lose (there's a facebook page devoted to that subject).

Withholding some details to protect the investigation or the victim's privacy is completely usual and appropriate. Withholding the name is not so hopefully there's an appropriate reason for treating this case differently than others.

    3. I saw that fb page. They made a decent argument for the water deaths in the Hudson between NYC and Hoboken to be considered something other than suicide/accidents.
I don't know the real story of course.

    4. I haven't read the fb page but I've never been happy with the explanations we've been given for what happened. Wouldn't building a taller fence be cheaper, faster and more effective than video cameras?

  6. I imagine, the statement from law officials "until they have notified family members" might be the reasoning behind withholding the name.

    1. A quick google search shows the authorities regularly releasing the names of shooting victims, including suicides, within 24 hours. That supposed reasoning doesn't ring true.

    2. I think this one is not simple...

      Delete
    3. Exactly. My point was that withholding the name based on an obviously contrived reason makes it look to me like something unusual is going on. I'm more curious about why the authorities are withholding the name than I am about who it is, especially if it turns out to be the guy who lives there since there would be no conceivable reason to be secretive about that.

      Delete
    4. No reason has been given for witholding the name. The secrecy must serve a purpose- for now.

  7. The members of the accredited press is respecting the victim's privacy the one member of the discredited press has not.

  8. Anon 11:33 quotes law officials saying that the name is being withheld "until they have notified family members." That sure sounds like law enforcement gave a reason, just not the real one.

It's hard to fathom what investigative reason there could possibly be for withholding the identity of the deceased (assuming they know it) unless there is some plan to trick someone into thinking the guy is still alive. Maybe the guy was a Russian spy and the authorities are hoping his handlers will reveal themselves.

  9. OK, don't name the victim - it's not important to anyone but those who knew and cared about him, but the rest of the community would like to know if there's a gun-toting maniac in our midst. Why the reticence?

  10. Day 3. Now it's ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  11. With the Genovese death, the city assured everyone that no foul play was involved in any past incidents at pier a even though a guy was thrown in and survived in 2014 Leprecon. Now the city can't find a way to make any kind of announcement 3 days after a murder. It's a freaking mile square city, not manhattan. Do we have a killer on the loose or not? Is that "need to know only" information under this new regime? Joke.

    1. We don't know that a guy got thrown in - we know the press reported at the time that he said he was thrown in. It seems to me that the City's statement speaks volumes as to the conclusion reached about the credibility of the Leprecon Day guy's story that he was thrown into the river by "three black guys." Perhaps they concluded after investigating that the guy's story was fabricated - that seems like the only way to reconcile the statement with the press accounts.

  12. According to nj.com, " Investigators have not ruled out a self-inflicted wound in the case."

  13. It was a domestic incident. The wife did it.
Always good to eavesdrop on local cops standing around bullshitting.

    1. If the wife "did it" and there was proof of that I imagine she's have been arrested and the statement wouldn't have said it could have been self-inflicted. That kind of sounds like at that point they didn't know and weren't ruling anything out.

Presumably the investigation will sort it out. If it was not self-inflicted then the spouse is almost always a suspect on some level.

Local cops bullshitting don't necessarily know what they're talking about.

    2. Especially when the local cops are the HPD. Let us not forget this is the same police force that couldn't investigate an overnight Friday/Saturday burglary at a bar years ago because no detectives were scheduled until Monday.

Sure, we have new top brass, but that doesn't mean the mentality has changed overnight.

If you're looking to read about a couple of jerk offs who spend all day on the blogs unsuccessfully suing a bunch of other jerkoffs who spend all their time disparaging people in town(like they're doing with the police dept. right now), you've come to the right site!

I don't agree with disparaging our HPD. I believe commenters are referring to the dark Falco- days. Under Chief Ferrante it is a vastly different force and they are working to mend broken trust with some members of the community.
