Happy Sting-iversary

top photo: Peter Cammarano associating with Lane Bajardi at his July 1, 2009 mayoral inauguration , bottom photo: Mayor Peter Cammarano arrested on July 23, 2009, charged with accepting $25,000 in cash bribes from an undercover cooperating witness

It was 6 years ago today, on July 23, 2009, that 44 individuals were arrested in New Jersey's largest political corruption sting to-date; 29 were public servants and political operatives, 5 were orthodox rabbis from the Syrian Jewish community.

Yes, our mayor, Peter Cammarano was one of them.

Before Peter Cammarano was elected mayor in a run-off with Dawn Zimmer, he was the general election opponent of a field of candidates which included Hoboken Councilwoman Beth Mason.

Many attribute Mason's distant third place finish to the sheer nastiness of her campaign, believed to be fueled by a small but influential group of political operatives.

Emails produced by Lane Bajardi and Kim Cardinal in their failed SLAPP suit prove this to be true.  Speaking of sheer nastiness, what about dropping a 'deadbeat dad' story about a political rival, outing his illegitimate child, casting the poor thing in the NJ media spotlight?

WHO would be that debased, that cruel, that disgusting to humiliate someone's child, expose her to scorn, just to advance Beth Mason's mayoral campaign?

WHO is that big a scumbag?

At 3:33 AM on May 7, 2009 Lane Bajardi emails James Barracato "T-Minus Five Hours from the email."  The message: "Our favorite website [Hoboken411.com] will blast the deadbeat off at 8:30 Thursday morning."

At 8:30 AM, on May 7, 2009  Hoboken411 publishes, "Peter Cammaranos Hidden Life. " The reaction from the Cammarano campaign is immediate, and candidate Cammarano held a press conference to deny the filthy smear posted on Hoboken411:
At a press conference he held today to announce his platform, Hoboken mayoral candidate Peter Cammarano vehemently denied internet rumors that he's a deadbeat dad who was taken to court for not paying child support.... "These people who are behind this, if they have their hands on some kind of arrest warrant -- unless someone can demonstrate I've actually violated my obligation, that I've been in arrears .... this is a private family matter."   Cammarano said the deadbeat dad allegation is a "shameful, low, disgusting, false and fraudulent" rumor spread by his mayoral rivals, specifically Beth Mason.
Emails prove that Camarrano was right.  Mason's Minstrels of Smear were neck-deep in this mud.

Starting at 9:28 AM this exchange occurs that morning, as the Mason campaign rushes to do damage control.

That day, emails [not posted] show both the Zimmer Campaign and Ravi Bhalla contact Hoboken411 rquesting to pull ads effective immediately.

At 6:03 PM Michael Goldberg, attorney working with Peter Camarrano, emails Hoboken411; Hoboken411 forwards the email to Lane Bajardi.

At 7:51 PM on May 7, 2009 Lane "Red Haven" Bajardi emails Hoboken411: "I'm going to have to write a substantial update that will need to run in the morning.  I want to do everything we can to avoid a lawsuit..."

At 2:34 AM on May 8, 2009, Lane Bajardi emails "Cammarano Part Deux" to Hoboken411 with the message: "Here we go again..."

These emails prove that the ghostwriter of this notorious Hoboken411 smear, an eleventh hour effort to influence the election outcome in favor of Beth Mason, was none other than the Plaintiff of the failed SLAPP suit, Lane "Not an operative" Bajardi.

Hence it is fascinating that only 10 weeks later, here Lane Bajardi was at the City Council, urging his "deadbeat dad" target to keep authority over zoning board appointments.

And the next day...

That is a business decision by a customer. It's no one else's freaking business. But because 411 was totally at the service of political masters, the customer's decision had to wait for Lane's go-ahead.

In addition to freely handing out the private information of "political enemies" to Team Beth, Klaussen is now shown blowing off paying clients until Team Beth tells him how to handle their requests.

  12. If the deadbeat dad story was true (does anybody know even today if it was?) then it doesn't seem inappropriate to me at all to use it politically - it raises very real character issues that voters might rightly want to consider. If Cammy was lying in his claim that it was really his Dad then that raises even larger and more legitimate character issues, and current ones not just youthful indiscretions. Sometimes how a candidate responds to a revelation is more revealing than the revelation itself. For example, Tom Grainey owned up to his bankruptcy which said something positive about his character, though it would have shown far more character for him to have disclosed it himself far earlier. Had he lied about it when it came out and said it was a different Tom Grainey that would have said something strongly negative about his character and that would have been a more important issue to me as a voter than the bankruptcy itself. All of these things are legitimate for voters to know about and consider.

There's also nothing unusual about campaigns trying to hide there role in negative campaigning so they can get the benefit of the "hit" while minimizing the cost of any backlash. That moght not be honest and transparent but it is par for the course.

Since Cammarano surely knew the source of this story yet he had no problem seeking and obtaining Bajardi's support (and seeking though not obtaining Mason's support), it seems pretty clear that Cammy's "outrage" was just a political ploy. He understood that this was how the game was played, would have done the same thing if he thought it would help him, and had no actual ill feelings.

Of course releasing this stuff at the last minute turned out not to be the brilliant strategy Bajardi thought it was. The ploy backfired on Mason and Cammy's faux outrage won the day. The moral of this story is not that Bajardi or the Masons were evil (at least not in this case). It is just more evidence (as if we needed any) that Lane was a political operative (albeit not a particularly skilled one) and a shameless hypocrite.

    1. Declaring bankruptcy at 30 for $20,000 and being a deadbeat dad are very different.
But to Mason, it's all the same., an opportunity to ruin people's lives.

It's still hard to believe that EVERYTHING Lane and KIMBO said was happening to them in their minds, THEY WERE ACTUALLY DOING TO EVERYONE ELSE

      Delete
    2. Anon @ 10:44 AM- I understand what you are saying, agree with some such as outsourcing of negative campaigning.

But, I vehemently disagree that a candidate's family and personal relationships- including (and especially) children- should be fodder for any campaign. That goes for everyone. Famous examples include rumors about Senator McCain's adopted child, his wife's alleged alcoholism, Kitty Dukakis' psychiatric history... Of course, there are no 'rules' for campaigning, and for some nothing is sacred, including dragging a child's illigitimacy (and alleged rejection by her father) into a political campaign.

IMO, it reflects on the character of the campaign that uses such tactics, and voters recognize that. That is the story of Beth Mason's political death-spiral- she embraced the nastiest and dirtiest tactics of a few political operatives.

Say what you want, I do not believe a talking point about a candidate's personal life reveals "very real character issues" because nobody knows what is the truth, and what the facts are in another's personal life. Common decency would preclude most campaigns from going there, and that is why Zimmer and Bhalla pulled their ads from Hoboken411. Both correctly ended their association after the 'deadbeat dad' story was published.

      Delete
    3. Declaring bankruptcy or being a deadbeat dad are legitimate campaign issues, If you have that kind of baggage and want to keep it private don't run for office. Claiming Mason or the Bajardis were trying to ruin peoples lives byexposing accurate information that voters might care about is absurd and hypocritical hyperbole.

If "reform" knew of a bankruptcy in Beth Mason's past you can be sure folks would make sure it became known and the same posters accusing Mason and Bajardi of "trying to ruin people's lives" would be blasting the Hoboken Reporter for not trumpeting it on their front page.

The Bajardi's did not invent hypocrisy. They just took it to an extraordinary level, never ever looking in the mirror as they attacked others who they believed were doing the same things the Bajardis did all the time. As we rightfully expose their hypocrisy it's worth remembering that they are not the only players (or ex players) in Hoboken politics guilty of never looking in the mirror.

    4. Anon, we will agree to disagree. Fiscal management is directly related to rskills required to run a city; one's parenting is not. They are not apples to apples- you are wrong. Bankruptcy has reams of documentary proofs, ones parenting or deadbeat dad' status is characcter assasination.

Yes, a Beth Mason bankruptcy would be germane to her skill as a legislator, her personal life is not. It may surprise you to know that I have known things of a personal nature about Mason which may explain her behavior but are not relevant to her public life, and not made them pubic. AndI don't plan to either.

    5. Ga - the "deadbeat dad" story was very clearly about the candidate not about the child just like your opinion that the Bajardi's were bad parents was about the Bajardi's not about their son. Neither of these are close calls.

The only incident I can think of in Hoboken in which someone came close to line of improperly involving children was when the Masons' were criticized for sending their children to school in NYC, and though I think going there was classless and stupid in my opinion it did not cross the line since it was brought up in the context of Ricky's letter touting the Mason's longstanding strong ties to Hoboken.

To give an example, saying a candidate's kids were flunking out of school would be way over the line. Pointing out that they went to an expensive private school in NYC is not. Naming the school is a closer call - crosses the line for me.

      Delete
    6. As for the deadbeat dad story, it was about the failure to pay child support not about parenting skills. And it there was documentary proof making it exactly analogous to the bankruptcy.

If Cammy was telling the truth about it being his Dad not him then it was either a mistake or a dirty trick. If he was lying then both the fact that he had to be hauled into court to pay child support and the fact that he lied about it are not only fair game but are indicative of very real and very serious character issues.

    7. Cammarano denied the story was true. Judging by how quickly Perry Kaluassen pulled it down and the reaction of Lane Bajardi and others in the emails fearing litigation, I would say it was a untrue story or at least a partially untrue story highly doctored to inflict the most injury on an opponent of Beth Mason.

      Delete
    8. Anon(s)- Right, it wasn't "about the child" - outing the child as illigitimate and progeny of a "dead beat" was simply collateral damage. You find that acceptable, I don't.

Abandoning a child financially ("deadbeat dad") is a parenting issue, unless one equates fatherhood with sperm donation. Abandonment is abandonment. It speaks volumes about character, but is it relevant in political life? We disagree. Some of our most highly respected presidents fathered illegitimate children, had lovers, and brazen behavior- I believe it was FDR (cud be another) who had his girlfriend living in the White House. So, if you ask me governing has little relationship with one's personal life, and a candidate's children should be left out of political campaigns. You can disagree, that is your opinion.

The piece of paper on Hoboken411 was not "proof" he was a "dead beat dad". It was there to bolster the credibility of Bajardi's smear. I have the unredacted document.

    9. GA - if a candidate for office had been legally charged with abusing a child (or anyone else for that matter) do you think that fact should be covered up in a political campaign? I can't imagine you actually believe that. I think you would want to know and would probably not vote for that person.

Deciding your child's bed time is a parenting issue. Living up to your legal obligation to pay child support is both a legal and moral one. Its not child abuse but its also not remotely a private parenting matter. You don't have to be involved in your child's life and whether you are is a private matter. But you do have to pay your share of the costs generated by your misplaced sperm and that is very much a matter of public concern.

As for the documentation, if the story was false its obviously a smear. The only way this whole discussion is meaningful is based on the premise that you seem to be positing that it was off limits even if true and I respectfully disagree. As a voter I wouldn't have cared unless there was more damaging info about the circumstances but I certainly don't think as you apparently do that the info should be hidden from me so that I would have no opportunity to evaluate it..

Without the misfortune of others, those creeps wouldn't have a paycheck, bankrolled by Ricky

And while the kids of these parasites should be off limits, nothing anyone writes in a post on a blog could be as damaging to the kids as what their parents are doing through their own actions. They're creating quite the reputation and legacy for their precious snowflakes that will haunt them well into adulthood.

    11. Anon @ 12:56- I am not arguing the definition of parenting. We disagree. I am not equating violence against a child (abuse) with abandonment of one's parental obligations to a child's emotional development and well being; this debate is approaching stupid, and you may have the last word.

The fact we are years later debating a fraudulently presented court document shows the effectiveness of the smear.

I also don't buy the "everyone does it, so it's ok" excuse. That's just what it is, an excuse with no moral grounding, and it's still unacceptable regardless of whether it's a common occurrence. If "everyone" cheats on their taxes, does that make it OK to cheat on taxes? Also, it's a bit of a straw man argument to say "reform would have done the same thing if they had the chance."

  15. Seems like a little light on the situation is useful between Cammarano and his newly found pal who was pitching for the unsworn role of Public Information Officer.

Cammarano was a crafty character. He knew and expected the deadbeat dad story would be used by an opponent. So he kept quiet about it. He probably knew it would be Beth Mason and Lane Blojobi being the conduits of it coming out on Hoboken411.

Cammrano as reported in the Jersey Sting knew and wanted it to be used. He was confident it would backfire in his favor making him sympathetic to the "locked-in" audience who would view him as a victim.

Beth Mason and Lane Bajardi played right into Cammarano's hands.

During the runoff election between Cammarano and Zimmer, Lane would meet with him and his Chief of Staff Joe Garcia in a Jersey City restaurant. They had business to discuss teaming up against Zimmer.

They became political pals as a result and Cammarano was Exhibit A in the parade of felons who testified on behalf of the Bejerkoffs. How'd that work out for for them and Petey Boy?

  21. Let's be clear, attacking Beth and Ricky Mason's decision to limo their teenage kids ( not Chilllldrennnn) to elite private schools in Manhattan is not an attack on the teenage daughters. It was a criticism on a wannabee public official's decision to not enroll in a local institution. Beth Mason appeared at Council meetings in 2005 to blast Roberts plan for a new high school by approaching the mic and declaring " Hoboken Schools are no good... (laugh) even our exchange student who lives with us didn't feel challenged at Stevens Co_op... Stevens Co-Op!!! [ sarcastically laughs again]
Beth put her near adult age daughters in TV commercials, Ricky spoke of how he and Beth were confused for a "Nice Italian Couple " ( Jews wearing crucifixes in certain parts of town may help that ) Beth and Ricky boasted that the negative ads were "working quite well " as he was overheard saying at a community event when a neighbor approached him and asked them to please reconsider the campaign tone. You see Ricky for years has been the silent evil, the faux statesman, the one who spoke of his dad, his daughters, the restoration of the haunted house...
