Mothers Day DIS: HR blocks Giattino story in its Hoboken edition

So, this friend of mine asked me how I liked the Jen Giattino story in the Hoboken Reporter this week.

I said, "What story?"

My friend, who lives in Jersey City said, "You know, how she and a bunch of other moms make lunches for the homeless shelter..."

GA checked this week's The Hoboken Reporter; the one that says "Happy Mothers Day" at the top.

NO Giattino story. This is what the Hoboken paper published instead*:

* This was not published in the Jersey City edition.

Hoboken, now do you see why this paper sucks?

Understand?  A heartwarming Hoboken story about a bunch of moms who've quietly been feeding homeless for years gets bumped for a story about North Bergen and West New York elections????

Excuse me, but for 99.9% of Hoboken residents who don't follow North Bergen or West New York politics, this story goes in the 'who gives a shit' file.

While Jen Giattino, is just as popular for her quiet acts of charity and community service as she is for her service on the City Council.

The Reporter's crass effort to SUPPRESS information about good works in our community, simply because they cast a reform politician in a good light, is true to the brand of The Hudson Reporter: drenched in partisan political bias, completely disinterested in the community it serves.

"The bounds of The Hoboken Reporter's speech"- suppressing news for political purposes

Folks, please READ the Giattino article as a Mothers Day Tribute to all those selfless moms dissed by The Hoboken Reporter on this Mothers Day.

With the assistance of a friend from the local charter school, Jen Giattino, councilwoman for the 6th Ward in Hoboken, struggled up Second Street carrying three shopping bags filled with pre-made meals.

As is her routine on Tuesdays, Giattino was delivering meals she and other parents made for distribution at the Hoboken Homeless Shelter.

“I started coming to the shelter about eight years ago,” she said, “long before I became a council person or politics even entered my head.”

The shelter at Bloomfield and Third streets resides in the heart of one of the more affluent parts of the city. A good portion of Bloomfield Street is made up of old brownstones converted over the years into condominiums.
This is more evidence that The Hoboken Reporter is a political operation dressed up as a newspaper.

It's rumored that Giattino will be opposed in the 6th Ward race by Carmelo Garcia, a 'friend' of the newspaper.  Clearly, keeping Hoboken residents in the dark about Giattino's years of feeding Hoboken homeless serves that purpose.

As a mom, GA is personally offended by this dis on, of all days, Mothers Day.

I wish you all- whoever you are... a very Happy Mother's Day.

  1. this is beyond ridiculous...it's nasty. ran into caren on friday, she looked really bitter. i guess non-stop nastiness and an inability to celebrate the good things some people are doing takes its toll after a while.

  2. The Hoboken Reporter knows what side it's bread is buttered on.
It has a clear political bias in everything it prints.

  3. Councilwoman Jennifer Giattino not only a wonderful mother to 3 beautiful boys, but a wonderful servant to the Hoboken community. She is deserving of respect and gratitude.

She will win in the 6th. Hands down.

"Happy Mother's Day" to all the fine, kind woman who serve the Hoboken Community:
Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Former Council Woman, Carol Marsh, Councilwoman Giatino, Former Board of Education members, Theresa Minutillo, Rose Markel, President Ruth Tyroler, Irene Sobolov, Jean Marie Mitchell, Jennifer Evans, Sharyn Angley, Monica Stromwall, and to you Dearest Nancy Pincus!

    1. Thank you, Dearest Anon. I had a wonderful Mother's Day- we went to "Life of Cats" a must-see exhibition for cat (and art) lovers- ends on June 7. I hope yours was lovely, too.

  4. It is a shame that the oft hand comment about Giattino not caring about poor people wasn't corrected. It was a very strange 'between the lines' comment. I do recall reading something about the lunch feedings when Giattino was first running for council. Maybe I read it on a blog or a campaign website, but I do recall knowing about it. I am interested to hear Giattino's position on affordable housing in advance of the run up to her re-election. According to Cheryl Fallick, who I spoke with directly and who was very clear that Jen can make her own positions known on affordable housing, but that her understanding is that Giattino is supportive of at least exploring a housing trust in Hoboken to address some of the needs of moderate income residents and agreed to join the adhoc panel chaired by Jim Doyle to look into creating one.

    1. I will hope to see it corrected in the column too, not just the story. I may make the suggestion

  5. Why is it every publication Beth "runs" -HR, Hoboken411- has to be biased to the point of absurdity?

Bonus question - why does someone so fundamentally anti-democratic keep trying to pass herself off as a democrat?

  6. Gosh, the antagonism toward Reform in Hoboken isn't news as the Old Guard rag Hudson Reporter doesn't hide waving that flag. But this is certainly another new methodology demonstrating how far being Old Guard the Hudson Reporter is willing to go - censoring their own newspaper!

Look, Al got conned into writing dumb stuff about Councilwoman Jen Giattino who is recognized and beloved for her service and outstanding representation on the City Council. That's not a biggie, the operatives for the Old Guard con Al all the time but at least he realized he had to follow up on stupid statements about her and so he called Councilwoman Jen Giattino out and then saw first hand the truth her years of efforts before running for office working on behalf of the Hoboken Homeless Shelter.

Since Al Sullivan followed his own challenge to conclusion, that put the publishers and editors in a quandry. Obviously, they decided the best way to support corruption is to keep this story about Councilwoman Jen Giattino out of the hands of Hoboken readers. After all it's an election year.

The words from people I hear most about Caren is how her she is a certain reptile. And the unanimous choice from each is she's a snake.

    1. I don't think Al Sullivan got conned.
I think he know full well the bias he is being spoon fed and includes in his column and is S.O.P. for the Hoboken Reporter.

  8. Matzner edits a "newspaper" about Hoboken, and presumably lives here. How does she expect anyone to work with them on any legitimate stories when the bias is so clear and the journalism so crappy? So a Hudson County politician lives elsewhere. That's news? Ever hear of Bret Schundler and all the others? Without seeing their stories referenced here, I'd never know what they were writing as I haven't read that paper in years. My neighbors just toss theirs too

  9. Yet again the local rag of a paper proves that it has no interest being impartial or anything but a mouthpiece for the scum that want to use the city for their own personal gain. Not that I would expect otherwise considering who owns the paper.

  10. I can hardly believe the HOBOKEN paper wouldn't publish this story about HOBOKEN moms feeding HOBOKEN homeless because they want to HELP Carmelo Garcia get elected.

  12. How is it that Garcia is running for office when he should be running from the law?

  13. This is the narrative that will be pushed. Heartless uncaring tea party conservative vs altruistic democratic populist.

What needs to be understood is that this isn't the usual HR anti-reform content control. It's HR actively participating in the campaign strategy of an anti-reform candidate by suppressing a story that conflicts with the forthcoming marketing materials of the candidate.

    1. whats the advertising worth if nobody's reading? the story about giattino and local moms feeding homeless is interesting, the wny mayoral races not interesting.

giattino's got lots of friends. stupid move.

  15. That story is wonderful and only one of many things Jen does that she doesn't advertise. It is why someone like her gets into public service, it is often built on private service first. I think people will be happy as they get to know her before election day. Allow me to ask, has the HR actually said they will not publish the story in coming weeks or is that an assumption made quickly because they haven't published in last weekend? I have sent them letters on Hoboken parking and environmental issues and they have appeared in different editions and I was surprised but there usually was an explanation and it always appeared in Hoboken after a few weeks. Wthout waiting a couple of weeks to see if they print it I think name-calling may have been jumping the gun The elction is a while away and I would hope they still plan on running it. I may ask them myself when I'm up there next week maybe it's worth asking Al Sullivan if they have been planning to run it in a future week. The election is a while away now.

  16. Well well well, lookie here what the Hoboken Reporter was obviously shamed into publishing in this weekend's print edition. On the front page, no less. I'm sure they have some clever excuse...

  17. I am so confused. Everyone seems to celebrate Ms. Giattino's work with the homeless, but aren't these the same people who have helped create the massive displacement of Hoboken residents into the shelter system? We need more vocal, on the record support for tenants in Hoboken. Almost no one in a position of power is willing to really step up on this issue. That's a shame, but what is shameful and hypocritical is to then tout concern over the homeless.

    1. Technically, you may have a point but basically your comment is total BS. Doubt there is anyone in the Hoboken homeless shelter who got priced out of their brownstone rental. And to not only dismiss but denigrate the charitable efforts of others just because it doesn't align with your feelings...THAT is what's "shameful".

      Delete
    2. You're not confused, but you're missing a few rungs on your ladder. You might even be missing the whole ladder. Please, include these in your talking points for Ms. Giattino' s challenger. Yes, I agree: it is shameful to make sandwiches for hungry, homeless people. I guess that's why you've never done it.

      Delete
    3. Some folks speak out for tenants, some don't. Most of the shelter's residents are previous residents of Hoboken. Our politicians are woefully lacking in speaking out on protecting tenants; perhaps because of the large amount of money and hence political sway the developers have. It's really awful. I'm glad Ms. Giattano helps with sandwiches (and I"m sure it makes her feel good), but the low income non-owners in this town need strong voices supporting tenant protections. That said, I'm sort of surprised to see the monitor make such a judgmental post about mine. I certainly don't support "the old guard" in any way shape or form, but I don't think just being "honest" is enough. We need a LOT MORE than we have been getting from our elected representatives. I'd give them a very low score on standing strong for tenants.

    4. Anon at 12:56, I highly doubt the shelter residents are mostly Hoboken residents who have been displaced as you describe.

However you may want to direct your anger at the Old Guard types who have run the HHA for decades and the VERY white Church Towers/Marine View power Brokers first and foremost.

Councilwoman Giattino has helped appoint good people to the HHA Board who will make the list and process to get into HHA much better than it ever has been

      So take your BS elsewhere

    5. It's amusing to see the Garcia Team focusing on homelessness and tenants rights, when their failed Vision-2020 proposal would have razed 13 acres of public housing and displaced hundreds of poor families out of Hoboken. That's right, Garcia tried to eliminate hundreds of units of public housing, in boondoggle 2020. Thank goodness for the wisdom of Giattino & Co. who opposed Garcia's wrecking ball, and saved the homes of hundreds of poor families.

I am sure you are "glad" Giattino helps at the shelter, so glad. Where did you get your data from about the residents of the Hoboken shelter? Did you write that all by yourself?

    6. Seriously you all. Am I not allowed to have an honest opinion and voice it. We are on the same side, btw, with mutual acquaintances. The shelter information is verified.

Will not be reading this blog again, that's for sure. That said, I realize now that this is more of a blog, with a strong viewpoint, than a forum for posting?
