In response to GA's Parade Debate a reader sent me a list of arrests made for ASSAULT among other things on last year's St. Paddy's Day Parade day in Hoboken. Many on the list were arrested for altercations with police officers.
Jeez, how drunk do you have to be to assault a cop?
GA found even more arrests cited on Patch, so lumped those in for a total of 21.
That's 62% of the total 34 arrests made- if anyone's got the complete list, please forward. But the 21are good for a snapshot analysis of those wreaking havoc here on parade day.
Here's the data- those arrested on parade day- organized by residency, gender and age:
Residency:
Hoboken resident: 1
non-Hoboken resident : 20
Gender:
Male: 18
Female: 3
Age (where available):
18-30 = 94%
30+= 6%
So what does this tell you?
Our young, male guests from out-of-town are causing the lion's share of the trouble.
These out-of-town 20-something males are not simply causing the nuisance, obnoxious behavior we've all seen (though one may extrapolate the same demographic is responsible) but violent criminal behavior, such as assault. Not on the list were 2 rapes reported last year.
As I said yesterday, time to withdraw the welcome mat. It's gotten ugly.
Moving the parade to a weekday is a start.
Here's what the data used to compile the above:
2010 ARRESTS made on March 5, 2010
- Hoboken residents, ages 18-30+ = 1
- Non-Hoboken residents ages 18-30: 14

The drinking establishments (both public & private, e.g., bars & house parties) are also technically liable for damages resulting from inebriation that leads to actionable activity. It's beyond time for that to be pursued in parallel prosecution. Not only around the St. Patrick's debauchery, but also for the year-round sot-behavior that results in criminal activity.
