So, yesterday there was a bit of buzz about the re-design over at H411. A few blog mentions, a couple of emails. Personally, in spite of my view of that site and it's proprietor (not good), his re-design doesn't interest me as a topic for criticism. It's his business. Literally.
My real interest in his re-design was that I have either linked to H411 or posted screen shots from his 'old' site, and was concerned the web pages were either gone (no) or updated (yes).
Fortunately, I still have screen shots of some earlier linked pages, so these historical artifacts can be seen in their original form.
Here is one example from an earlier post, shown with new and old layouts:
Uh-oh. Houston, we have a problem.
Do you see how the chimpanzee's chin (and Mayor Zimmer's) are cut off in the new layout? While the entire face of the chimp (and Mayor Zimmer's) appear in the old layout? Yet, both screen shots were taken at the same 'zoom' setting! It's because the new Google bar feature in the header takes up additional screen space! Now in order to see the whole chimpanzee's face (and Mayor Zimmer's) in the new layout you have to scroll down! But in the original layout both human and simian faces were visible on the page, without scrolling.
I think most people would prefer to see their human-animal comparisons on H411 without scrolling, don't you? It somehow dilutes the humiliation factor of it's human victim when you don't get the whole eyeful at once.
Perhaps going forward, H411 needs to use smaller monkeys?
Maybe the next tasteless H411 human-animal comparison should feature another species, something smaller like a rat, due to the new layout restrictions. Or perhaps a goat- they have little faces. Any creature would do, as long as it sufficiently degrades the individual it's being compared to.
Do slugs have faces?
