The following reader submission is a rebuttal to Peter Cunningham's
"I saw Peter "I'd Rather Be Sailing" Cunningham's message to his neighbors and friends. I hope for his sake that he allowed some deranged individual ghost-write this piece for him because it was an embarrassing bit of drivel.
So, as he dissects the plan, Ghost Cunningham's facts are consistently wrong and his omissions are telling. For example, he neglects to mention he voted for the plan in 2014.
He is wrong in saying the plan was expected to be in phases. To the contrary, the plan stresses that there will be one agreement for the whole project so the developer could not "cherry pick" the profitable portion and never get around to building out the rest. And he does not mention that, at the last council meeting, he said he would support higher buildings than in the plan amendment. Way to stand up for us all!
He cites that there is an additional 1.3M square feet of future development in the amendment. In fact it is 944,000 sq ft. Missed by 350,000 sq. ft., Ghost Pete. Ooops. He says that adds up to 2.7M sq ft, an increase from the original 2.3M. Yet 1.37M sq ft plus a potential (but not certain) .944M does not equal 2.7M sq ft, but 2.3M. Oops, no change; off by 400,000 sq ft.
Ghost Petie says he does not see accommodating Rebuild by Design a hurdle and that NYC has done so for years. Not true at all. NYC has not yet taken any RBD resiliency steps post-Sandy; Hoboken is way ahead of NYC, so God knows what the heck Ghost Pete is thinking or smoking? He then ignorantly says there is no basis to amend the plan -- other than the fact that over 40% of the project, as envisioned in the existing plan, cannot be built? Minor hurdle.
Then he starts in on Mayor Bhalla, the unions, Russo, and Jabbour. He neglects to mention that the amendment came out of a council subcommittee chaired by his close ally, Councilman DeFusco (whom he put on the Planning Board to guard the hen house from bad development). As a Republican, Ghost Pete's antipathy toward unions is consistent and runs deep.
In his misogynistic swipe at Jabbour, he neglects to point out that at the last meeting he accused her of unethical behavior, so when she then abstained in an abundance of caution (her words) after being blind-sided with the allegation, he criticizes her for abstaining. What a hero. Then he mentions suggesting that Corporation counsel should investigate the alleged potential conflict. As a councilperson for 12 years, you'd think he'd learn at least a little - conflicts are not investigated by corporation counsel; it is up to the council person to decide if they have an ethical issue and live with the consequences. I guess Ghost Pete has been watching what is happening to his President and has investigations on his mind.
Based on Ghost Petie's horrendous attendance record at all public meetings, I guess we should be thrilled he will deign to come out for the 15 minutes that he claims he can spare (I'll believe if you show up).
