Sullivan: "Three Tickets in Hoboken?"

Did you know that Al Sullivan devoted half of this week's column to Hoboken politics? Specifically, speculation about a 3-way race in our mayoral election:  Zimmer vs. Romano vs. DeFusco.

All of that speculation inspired GA to make this original 1-minute movie:

Did you enjoy that?  No?

You know, GA likes Mike DeFusco.

So I can't understand the thin-skinned,touchy reaction from some folks every time this blog muses about whether or not he's running for mayor.  The reaction is more interesting that the speculation.

Mike told me himself that he wasn't running for mayor, and I believed him.  But... there is that BUZZ. Al Sullivan's heard it, too.

And then, some buzz contradicts other buzz.  A source told me recently that "Romano wants DeFusco to run to split Zimmer's vote."   Then today, I heard from a reliable Hudson County source that  "Romano is not running."  For mayor.

So... which is it?  In or out?  2 or 3?  Up or down?

Well, with one confirmed phone poll hitting last weekend, all GA can say for sure is:
"Welcome to the Races!"

  1. Who still reads Al's crap? He ceased to be relevant in Hoboken since before the last mayoral election. Yet, he has managed to maintain a certain level of boorish creepiness.

BTW, Stick looks way better in the tutu than the mayor.

  2. I dont think Stick is running for Mayor. If he was, he would be trying to be more visible to the side that doesnt vote for him. And he isnt because he knows that side wont. He got slaughtered during the BOE race. And he saw the effort made by so many and the number of voters. When he envisions the mayorial election, he sees all those people out knocking and kicking ass again. And... if he didnt think about that on his own, he probably sees it so much in your blog that he realizes it is different this time. The "thems" (as in us vs. them) are much bigger and much more ferocious... and credible... than ever before. No one even cares about the freeholder race in Hoboken because no one knows they exist or what they do. So Stick has a lock there. Which is where I think hell probably stay.

  3. Romano has a great gig as Freeholder, salary, car, platinum benefits, staff and as many photo ops he needs to feed his ego for doing little more than showing up.
To think he would risk all of that in what most people who aren't blowing smoke up his butt by entering the race he would lose is just dumb.

    1. just curious, how much does a freeholder make? stick has other sources of income, obviously, but wonder what the government salary is. we know the perks are decent, who could argue with health/pension bennies and no pressure to actually get anything done!

    2. HC Freeholders make about $43K plus bennies.

    3. Freeholder is the ultimate no show job. Plus you can tell all the ladies about it. Can't see him leaving that cushy gig for a race he would get smoked in

  4. Not for nothing but stick actually does show up. He shows up to everything. One can not knock him for that. He also always answers his phone when you call him, and is always respectful to people no matter what side of the aisle you are on.

    1. yeah, he shows up...for ribbon cuttings and photo ops regarding projects that other people made happen.

the question is: what has stick DELIVERED himself? i honestly don't know and would be curious to understand how hoboken has benefited under romano as freeholder. one thing's for sure: we haven't benefited through lower (or even stable) county taxes.

      c'mon, educate me.

    2. Stick did standby while the County stuck Hoboken taxpayers with another double digit tax increase. Does that count ?

  5. As the only local blog that covers the BOE beyond who got the most vbm, have you thought about doing a piece on the ramifications for Hoboken of Betsy DeVos?

    1. No I haven't, and I won't. I have no expertise on education policy at a national or state level. If you do, your contribution is welcome.

I watched the DeVos hearing. She said she would defer to the states to make policy on "educational opportunities" in their respective communities. Nothing she said bodes well for the future of public education in America. She infered that it was A-OK for private business to profit from education. Not surprising given that one of her family businesses is an online charter school. Of course, the hearing was shoved through before the ethics office review was complete and the committee had no opportunity to review her financial docs, inc tax returns. She promised to divest from education-related businesses, but without an ethics review who the hell knows what they are. Welcome to the Trump Era.

    2. Thank you for that rational response. As the only Hoboken political website left worth looking at, I appreciate your rational thoughts.

I can't tell the difference anymore with the other 2 websites that dabble in Hoboken politics. They also compare too much to white nationalist sites so I won't give them the clicks

    3. While you may not agree with MSV it has a valid point of view and your trying to undermine the site says far more about your closed mindedness.

      Delete
    4. @11:11...disagreeing with someone's "point of view" is not close mindedness. people can write/say whatever they want, but it's the readers/listeners who decide for themselves if they feel that POV is "valid".

    5. I wish people wouldn't throw shade at someone who has been a vital LOCAL news source for Reform since 2009.

10:27-Wouldn't it be more productive to open a direct dialog with him and not take "Anonymous" shots here?

    6. I tried and got nowhere in a few different ways on the dialog front.

And yes, great for local stuff and will be forever grateful for the trials and tribulations that were suffered, and still suffers through today. But when someone goes down the alt-right road I lose interest in their redeeming qualities.

But you are right. This is not the place for that

  6. He can have his point of view, just like Perry K is entitled to his POV. Likewise, I can certainly have my point of view that MSV has become a become a mirror image of Hoboken411. Both should be relegated to the trash heal of information sources about Hoboken. THAT, is my opinion. And I am entitled to that opinion and to express it. BTW, have you tried to engage that dim witted horse in a rational conversation lately? From experience, that is not happening - he is completely bonkers.

    1. Bubble vision. In light of the soul crushing shock many people experienced when Hillary Clinton failed to become POTUS as their favored media sources had all but guaranteed, it would be wise to start listening other points of view. outside their myopic bubble.

    2. Breitbart? Alex Jones? Yeah, right. I have a brain and don't cotton to conspiracy theories spouted by, racist, misogynistic, anti-semitic wife beating assholes. Let them listen to those little voices in their tin foil capped heads. BTW, I read the National Review and American Spectator, which may belie your assumption that I am a liberal that is not open to "other pints of view". Smug idiot.

  9. Mike DeFusco's "present" vote last night on the keep the possible use of eminent domain in negotiating to enlarge the SW Park. is reminding people stupid votes and grand standing of Beth Mason.

The rest of the City Council vote "yes."

    1. Did Mike give a reason for voting present?

      Delete
    2. Yep, he used an old worn out Beth Mason excuse, he didn't have enough information to vote. Odd since all of eight others on the Council had enough information to cast yes votes.

      Delete
    3. So basically his excuse is he wasn't paying attention. That was his political cover for that cowardly vote. Expect him to fail to show up for the next potentially controversial vote and blame having a runny nose for that missed vote. Always worked for Mason - and for us. Her antics allowed us to see her for what she truly is just as we are seeing him for what he truly is.

      Delete
    4. As he's in his second year on the council claiming not to have enough information is improper.

      Delete
  10. My patience is growing thin with him. Someone close to Mike should point out that channeling Mason is not a great game plan. But then again, it appears that he is surrounding himself with a bunch of OG relics and ex reform wannabes; ergo, the prospect of Mike getting any objective or quality advise is slim and next to none. Is that slimy fish swimming around him yet? Any association with that greasy smelly chum would be the absolute kiss of death to any of Mike's political aspirations. In fact, his dumb explanation has me writing him off as a credible candidate for anything in the future, unless he redeems himself, and fast.

  11. Under Roberts Rules of Order, which the Council adheres to, abstentions and present votes are counted as no votes. Defuse can't have it both ways. In city's, ground level parking, whether for cars or buses, is the worst possible land use option. Eminent domain ain't pretty, but the City did the right thing and Academy will be compensated. This day was coming.
